Santander to report nine-month results on October 28 after ordinary profit rose 16%
Key Facts
Santander will report its nine-month 2026 results on October 28, after ordinary profit rose 15% to €7.328 billion in the first half, according to its results statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In the same period, net loan-loss provisions increased 9% to €6.574 billion. This puts ordinary profit, which reflects operating performance, alongside the cost of credit without implying that higher provisions reduced earnings. Attributable profit rose 31% to €8.973 billion in the first half. That figure included a net capital gain of €1.9 billion from the sale of Santander Bank Polska, partly offset by €250 million in restructuring costs related to the integration of TSB.
The comparison between ordinary profit and attributable profit is important in reading the bank’s results because the figure reported to shareholders included the gain on the sale and restructuring costs, while ordinary profit showed annual growth of 15%. In the first half, Santander reported net loan-loss provisions of €6.574 billion, up 9% from the same period in 2025, alongside a rise in ordinary profit to €7.328 billion. These figures do not establish that provisions caused earnings to decline; attributable profit grew 31% to €8.973 billion. The bank also linked the €250 million in restructuring costs to the integration of TSB, not to an increase in loan-loss provisions. The net €1.9 billion gain from the sale of Santander Bank Polska was a separate impact on reported profit for the period.
The 2025 results provide a baseline for comparison with the bank’s performance in 2026. Net loan-loss provisions rose 1% to €12.411 billion, while attributable profit increased 12% to €14.101 billion, according to Santander’s annual statement. In the first nine months of 2025, attributable profit was €10.337 billion, up 11% year on year, the group’s best-ever result for the period at the time, according to its press release archive. These figures allow profit growth to be compared across the full year and the corresponding period, while distinguishing between net provisions, ordinary profit and attributable profit. The nine-month 2026 results are due on October 28, allowing the comparison to be updated for the same period a year earlier.
Santander said in July that it expected 2026 profit to exceed the €14.1 billion recorded in 2025, and set a target for its Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of between 12.8% and 13% for the year. Chief Executive Ana Botín said the first-half results reflected disciplined risk management, adding: "We are confident that our strategy will continue to drive profitable growth," and confirmed that the bank had reaffirmed all its 2026 and medium-term targets. These targets provide an annual framework for assessing reported results, while the nine-month results remain the next scheduled milestone on October 28. The bank has set November 2 as the start date for payment of its interim cash dividend. It also said its fourth-quarter 2026 results presentation will take place on February 3, 2027.
