Shield AI and the existing joint venture Rheinmetall Barzan Advanced Technologies signed a memorandum of understanding at Milipol Qatar 2026 to explore integrating the Hivemind autonomy software into autonomous maritime defense and security solutions designed in Qatar, according to an announcement by Shield AI. The move examines the potential for software integration and does not announce the creation of a new joint venture between the parties. The announcement also includes no purchase contract or supply award and specifies no financial value or delivery schedule. The company said the collaboration aims to enable coordinated autonomous operations across multiple vessels. That places the agreement’s focus on developing potential technical capabilities, while implementation details remain subject to the outcome of the exploration phase.

The memorandum was signed on the second day of the exhibition by Mimi Shalash, Shield AI’s senior director of Hivemind, and Dr. Sinan Al-Obaidi, CEO of RBAT, according to the company. Milipol Qatar was held in Doha from October 20 to 22, 2026, according to the exhibition’s website. The signing took place on the sidelines of the event, where RBAT appeared among exhibitors in the drones and robotics sector. The memorandum links Shield AI’s software with Qatar-designed maritime solutions, without specifying a particular vessel model or operational specifications. It also did not say that the agreement is intended for a specific military fleet.

RBAT comprises Barzan Holdings and Rheinmetall AG and was established in 2017 as a joint venture between them, according to Shield AI. Its stated portfolio includes command-and-control software, unmanned systems and counter-drone solutions. This existing activity provides an industrial base for the memorandum in Qatar, while Hivemind adds an autonomy component that the companies aim to explore integrating into Qatar-designed maritime solutions. Shield AI said the software has powered more than 40 platforms, including unmanned surface vessels, aircraft, helicopters, ground vehicles and a satellite. This illustrates the range of applications the company cites for the software, without implying that all those platforms are connected to the Qatar memorandum.

The announcement coincided with Barzan’s display of two unmanned surface vessels at Milipol Qatar 2026, according to Breaking Defense. The first was the Rased surveillance boat; the second was a coast guard vessel that can be converted to operate with or without a crew. Gulf Times reported that the coast guard vessel conversion project was developed locally in cooperation with the Qatari Coast Guard, which is part of the Ministry of Interior. The displays were among more than a dozen defense platforms Barzan unveiled at the exhibition, including drones, maritime systems and electronic warfare platforms. These products provide local context for the focus on maritime solutions, but the memorandum announcement did not link them to equipping either vessel or to a specific purchase.

Shield AI described the collaboration in the context of its earlier maritime partnerships and demonstrations with Taiwan’s Thunder Tiger and the UK’s Kraken Technology Group. In July 2026, Shield AI and Thunder Tiger announced the completion of Hivemind’s first multi-platform maritime demonstration, using unmanned Sea Shark vessels in a coordinated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission. In September, Shield AI said two vessels equipped with the software operated as a team on a similar mission, tracking and escorting a target vessel. The company said the Qatar memorandum followed those partnerships and successful demonstrations. The prior trials provide an operational backdrop for the collaboration under consideration, but do not determine the outcome of deploying the software in Qatar.

On the market, Rheinmetall’s American depositary receipts, which trade under the ticker RNMBY, closed at $228.08 on October 27, compared with $231.72 at the previous session’s close, according to L7 data. The comparison shows a decline between the two closes, without attributing the move to the memorandum of understanding. At the company level, Rheinmetall recorded sales of €9.935 billion in fiscal 2025, up 29% from €7.715 billion in 2024, according to its annual report. Its order backlog stood at €63.8 billion on December 31, 2025, compared with €46.9 billion at the end of 2024. These figures place the agreement in the context of an expanding defense company’s business, but the memorandum itself does not announce new revenue or orders.

As for next steps, Shield AI said in September that its collaboration with Kraken would include further joint trials in contested environments, in cooperation with British and NATO partners during the year following the announcement. That timeline applies to Shield AI’s collaboration with Kraken and does not set dates for stages of the Qatar memorandum. Shield AI’s announcement about RBAT did not give a date for a maritime trial or a final decision on integration. The announced step remains an exploration of integrating Hivemind into Qatar-designed maritime solutions. The announcement did not specify a timeline for any subsequent implementation or purchase.
