Edison: QatarEnergy extends suspension of 38 LNG cargoes through end-December
Key Facts
Edison said on October 27 that QatarEnergy had extended force majeure on liquefied natural gas deliveries through the end of December 2026, from the previous deadline at the beginning of the same month. The suspension, which began in early April, applies to cargoes scheduled for the Italian company, according to its statement. The extension covers 3 additional cargoes destined for Italy’s Adriatic LNG terminal. That brings the total number of cargoes subject to force majeure during the period to 38. Edison said the cargoes represent about 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
Edison said it had replaced 27 cargoes through October 27, equivalent to about 2.7 billion cubic meters of gas. The figures show that the company secured alternatives for some of the affected volumes, while the suspension covered a total of 38 cargoes through the end of December. In its September extension, the company had said 35 cargoes were covered by force majeure through early December and that it had replaced 23 cargoes through September 28. The October update adds 3 cargoes to the total it announced in September. The number of cargoes replaced since that announcement also rose from 23 to 27.
The affected cargoes are linked to a long-term contract between Edison and QatarEnergy to supply gas to Italy. Annual volumes under the contract amount to 6.4 billion cubic meters, according to the Italian company. The agreement took effect in 2009 and has a total term of 25 years. Edison said it had "replaced 27 liquefied natural gas cargoes, equivalent to about 2.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas," through October 27. These figures put the announced disruption in the context of the contractual relationship between the two parties, without specifying how much of the annual supply will actually arrive during the force majeure period.
Force majeure notices were also extended to buyers in South Asia, Reuters reported in September, citing two trading sources. The sources said customers in Bangladesh and Pakistan had been informed at the time that the notices would be extended through November. The report linked those notices to the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz at the time. That information does not match the scope of Edison's disclosure, which concerns deliveries to the Adriatic LNG terminal in Italy. The different buyers and deadlines reflect notices covering multiple contracts and markets, with details of each disclosed separately.
