J.P. Morgan Launches JPM Coin on Ethereum to Expand Institutional Transfer Options
Key Facts
J.P. Morgan announced on October 19, 2026, that JPM Coin, its deposit token, is available on the Ethereum network, adding a second public network after Base, which hosted it first. The bank said the move gives institutional clients multi-network options for wholesale money transfers, expanding the links between its financial services and infrastructure used by institutions in the digital asset market. CoinDesk, citing a statement the bank sent by email, reported that the token was technically deployed on Ethereum’s mainnet on Monday and became available for institutional use. That means the announcement was not merely a future plan, but an actual launch for institutional clients. The bank launched JPM Coin in November 2025.
JPM Coin, which trades under the ticker JPMD, represents deposits held at J.P. Morgan and is denominated in U.S. dollars, according to the bank’s definition. The company says the token supports transfers from one institutional client to another within the Ethereum ecosystem, which includes Base and Ethereum. Its use therefore expands from one network to two public networks within the same ecosystem, giving institutional clients more options. The bank’s head of Kinexys said issuing it first on Base and then on Ethereum represents “an important step toward providing multi-network options for our institutional clients.” The announced use is limited to institutions; sources do not mention availability of the token to individuals.
The availability of JPM Coin on Ethereum allows clients to send and receive money within seconds, around the clock, Bloomberg Law reported, citing the bank. This compares with traditional transfers, which can take several days and are limited to business hours, according to the report. The capability has operational significance for institutions that need to move money outside regular banking settlement hours. Bloomberg also cited payments, trade settlement and support for tokenized assets as potential uses. These were uses the report described as possibilities; the bank did not say the expansion is aimed at increasing transaction activity.
The bank justified its choice of Ethereum by the depth of liquidity available on the network and the presence of tokenized assets on it, calling it “the natural next public network for JPM Coin.” CoinDesk said Ethereum offers greater liquidity than competing networks and is already used by institutional clients. The expansion comes as the bank seeks to give clients options for moving wholesale funds across public networks and private networks in the digital finance sector. Base announced the launch of a proof-of-concept trial for a dollar-denominated deposit token on June 25, 2025, providing the starting point before Ethereum was added. The move to a second network gives clients an additional route, but the published information does not indicate a separate interoperability mechanism between the two networks.
Kinexys figures reflect the scale of the broader platform on which JPM Coin operates, not the token’s transaction volume on Ethereum. J.P. Morgan said Kinexys had processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions since its launch, with an average of $7 billion a day. The company reported in April 2026 that cumulative value had exceeded $3 trillion, while the daily average had topped $5 billion at the time. The comparison shows both figures cited in the October statement were higher than the April figures, but it does not break out JPM Coin’s share of the platform’s total activity. These figures therefore provide context on Kinexys’ scale, not a measure of the token’s activity after its Ethereum launch.
The expansion also comes amid growth in tokenized assets on public networks. In May 2026, J.P. Morgan’s asset management arm launched a second tokenized money market fund on Ethereum and invested $100 million in it at launch. The asset manager then estimated that traditional assets tokenized on public networks totaled about $30 billion as of April 30, 2026, and said assets under management in on-chain products had nearly tripled since early 2024. As for JPM Coin’s expansion beyond Base, CoinDesk said the bank disclosed plans in January to launch the token on the Canton network. The source did not specify a launch date there, while the Ethereum launch expands the network options currently available to institutional clients.
