JetBlue shares surged after third-quarter results showed revenue growth and a stronger outlook for seat yields, as the company contends with losses and mounting financial pressure. Operating revenue was 2.812 billion dollars, up 21.1% from 2.322 billion dollars in the same period of 2025. Operating revenue per available seat mile, a measure of returns on offered capacity, also rose 18.4% year over year, exceeding the company’s initial forecast. For the fourth quarter, the company expects the metric to grow between 18% and 22%, with seat capacity increasing between 3% and 4%.

JetBlue attributed most of its third-quarter revenue outperformance to higher yields, supported by improved revenue-management technology, and said demand remained resilient during peak and off-peak periods. Those factors help explain the rise in revenue despite a decline in the load factor to 83.6%, down 1.5 percentage points from a year earlier. The company said higher yields, "supported by improved revenue-management technology, drove most of the third-quarter revenue outperformance." But the revenue improvement did not prevent the operating loss from widening to 144 million dollars, compared with 100 million dollars a year earlier. The company also reported an adjusted loss of 0.60 dollars per share, versus analysts’ estimates for a loss of 0.53 dollars per share.

Fuel remained a major drag on results: the average price of jet fuel was 3.91 dollars per gallon in the third quarter, up 57% from the year-earlier period, while fuel expense rose 61% to 868 million dollars from 539 million. JetBlue said it recaptured about 87% of the increase in fuel costs through revenue strength, indicating that it offset much of the pressure without fully recovering it. The company expects fuel to cost 4.64 dollars per gallon in the fourth quarter, with prices 85% higher year over year. Even so, it expects the operating margin to expand by 1 to 2 percentage points year over year in the fourth quarter. For the full year, JetBlue raised its adjusted operating-margin forecast to a loss range of 4.5%–6.5%, compared with its July forecast of a loss between 2% and 5%.

The operational recovery bets come amid liquidity and debt pressures. The net loss nearly doubled in the first nine months of 2026 to 823 million dollars, and the company used 273 million dollars in cash from operations, compared with 143 million in the same period a year earlier. Unrestricted cash and investments also fell by about 850 million dollars since December to 1.6 billion dollars at the end of September. The company said it ended the third quarter with 2.2 billion dollars in liquidity, including an undrawn 600 million dollar credit facility, and about 7 billion dollars in unencumbered assets. In its quarterly report, it said liquidity was sufficient to meet its needs for at least 12 months, and it expects to raise an additional 250 million dollars through aircraft-backed financing in the fourth quarter.

On the debt side, obligations tied to debt and finance leases totaled about 8.4 billion dollars, while JetBlue has not posted an annual profit since 2019. The company’s loyalty-program-backed bonds fell to about 47 dollars per 100 dollars of debt on October 26, from about 80 dollars at the start of the month, and their yields exceeded 30%. Chief Executive Joanna Geraghty told Reuters the company "is not in discussions with its creditors," denying that it was holding talks about debt restructuring. It has debt and finance-lease payments of 477 million dollars due in 2027 and 582 million in 2028, before 1.8 billion dollars comes due in 2029. That timeline puts liquidity and cash generation under investor scrutiny as the company executes its turnaround plan.

JetBlue says it is targeting sustainable operating profitability in 2027, followed by earnings per share of at least one dollar and positive free cash flow in 2028. The third-quarter results conference was scheduled for October 27, 2026, at 10 a.m. Eastern time. In a follow-up on market moves, Bloomberg reported that the shares rose 20% to 2.86 dollars at 11 a.m. New York time on October 28, after the company reaffirmed its confidence in returning to profitability the following year. But a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst described the fourth-quarter outlook as "looking challenging" and said the company would need to reduce cash burn before reaching its free-cash-flow target. The stock’s rise therefore remained subject to two tests: converting expected revenue growth into a better margin and slowing cash consumption.
