ICON shares jumped 9.3% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, October 27, after the company reported third-quarter results and raised its full-year 2026 guidance range. Investing.com attributed the move to strong bookings and an updated annual outlook. ICON said revenue for the quarter ended September 30 was $2,024.8 million, with adjusted diluted earnings of $2.66 per share. Both figures beat analyst estimates cited by Investing.com of $2.01 billion in revenue and $2.64 per share. Revenue, however, remained below its level a year earlier, setting the positive earnings surprise against continued annual declines.

Revenue fell 2.9% compared with the third quarter of 2025, or 2.5% on a constant-currency basis, according to the company’s statement. Adjusted diluted earnings per share also declined from $3.20 a year earlier to $2.66, while adjusted net income was $205.8 million. Under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles, ICON reported net income of $122.1 million and diluted earnings of $1.58 per share. The company had reported a diluted loss of $3.67 per share in the year-earlier period. It also reported adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $336.9 million, equal to 16.6% of revenue, down 13.1% year over year.

Strong bookings led the operating indicators accompanying the results. Gross bookings totaled $3,789 million, up 26.9% from the third quarter of 2025, while cancellations totaled $639 million. This resulted in net business awards of $3,150 million and a bookings-to-revenue ratio of 1.56 times. Backlog stood at $24.5 billion on September 30, up 4.8% from the previous quarter. In the second quarter, net business awards were $3,120 million and the bookings-to-revenue ratio was 1.51 times, while backlog reached $23.4 billion after a quarterly increase of 3.0%.

ICON raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to a range of $8,100 million to $8,200 million, and its adjusted diluted earnings-per-share outlook to $10.35–$10.65. In guidance issued in July, the company had maintained a revenue range of $7,850 million to $8,150 million and adjusted earnings of $10.00 to $11.00 per share. Chief Executive Barry Paff said the updated guidance reflects “continued operational progress and higher pass-through activity.” He added that strong commercial performance, disciplined execution and ongoing strategic investments bolster the company’s confidence in delivering revenue growth and significant earnings progress during 2027 and beyond. Before the announcement, analyst estimates had pointed to revenue of $2.01 billion, 2.4% below second-quarter revenue of $2.06 billion.

On a quarterly basis, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 3%, driven by an improved business mix and cost discipline, the company said. ICON generated free cash flow of $302.4 million during the quarter and repurchased $400 million of shares at an average of $170 per share. The board raised total share repurchase authorization to $750 million. In August, the company issued $2.15 billion in notes and used the proceeds to repay a $900 million term loan, redeem $750 million of notes due in May 2027, and repay $500 million of a bridge credit facility. Cash and cash equivalents totaled $809.0 million on September 30, compared with $928.4 million on June 30 and $468.9 million a year earlier, while net debt was $2.6 billion.

ICON scheduled its third-quarter earnings call for October 28, 2026, at 08:00 U.S. Eastern Time, corresponding to 12:00 in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The call is expected to give the company an opportunity to present its quarterly results and updated annual guidance. It follows the results announcement on October 27, the day the company’s shares rose after hours. The new guidance links a higher annual revenue range with the company’s expectations for improved earnings in 2027 and beyond. The update also comes as the quarterly results show a contrast between growth in bookings and backlog on one hand, and year-over-year declines in revenue and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization on the other.
