Ecobank Posts $737 Million in Nine-Month Pre-Tax Profit, Up 12%
Key Facts
Ecobank Group posted pre-tax profit of $737 million in the first nine months of 2026, up 12% year on year, MyJoyOnline reported, citing Chief Executive Jeremy Awori. Return on tangible equity was 24.9% for the period, while revenue rose 12% to $2.0 billion. Awori said the group delivered "pre-tax profit of $737 million, up 12% year on year, and return on tangible equity of 24.9%." He added that net revenue growth reached 12%, bringing it to $2.0 billion. The results put profit and revenue above the levels of the year-earlier period, while management said it remained on track to meet its 2026 targets.
Awori said deposit growth helped ease pressure from the rate-cutting cycle in the group's markets. Net interest income rose 12% in the nine months, while payments revenue increased 9%. The chief executive said growth in payments revenue supported performance, and deposit growth "helped ease margin pressure" from the rate-easing cycle. The figures show core revenue streams growing alongside an expanded deposit base during the period.
Operating expenses also rose 12%, matching the 12% revenue growth rate, according to the correction based on the financial statements. The figures indicate that the ratio moved only modestly between the two periods, with the statements not describing it as a material improvement. This places efficiency and credit quality indicators alongside profit and revenue growth in assessing the group's performance.
Performance was uneven across the group's regional markets: Central, Eastern and Southern Africa and English-speaking West Africa posted gains, while results declined in Nigeria and Francophone West Africa. The divergence shows that overall growth came from mixed regional performance rather than a uniform expansion across all markets. Ecobank operates across multiple African markets, and Chairman Babacar Ndiaye described the group's model as "pan-African" when discussing its resilience. In fiscal 2025, the group posted record pre-tax profit of $801 million, up 21%, and net revenue of $2.45 billion, up 17%. Shareholders approved a $40 million dividend for 2025 in June 2026, the first payout since 2022.
Awori said the group remained on track to meet its 2026 targets, but identified energy prices, inflation and foreign-exchange volatility as risks for the rest of the year. MyJoyOnline quoted him as saying: "Energy prices, inflation and exchange volatility are real risks as we navigate the rest of the year." The risks come as the group continues to operate amid a rate-cutting cycle in its markets, which the chief executive said deposit growth had helped ease the pressure of on margins. Ecobank published its first-half 2026 results on July 28 and presented them on July 30. The report did not specify a date for the group's next results release.
