Steel Authority of India, known as SAIL, reported consolidated net profit of 1,750.47 crore rupees for the quarter ended September 2026, The Economic Times reported. Net profit quadrupled year on year, while revenue from operations was 31,997.55 crore rupees, the newspaper said. Revenue was 26,704.17 crore rupees in the year-earlier period. That puts higher sales alongside stronger profitability at the forefront of the quarter's results. The reported figures show both revenue and expenses growing, so the coverage does not attribute the profit jump to any specific factor beyond higher revenue.

Total expenses rose to 29,913.65 crore rupees in the September 2026 quarter, compared with 26,113.64 crore rupees in the year-earlier period, according to The Economic Times. This means the cost base expanded alongside growth in revenue from operations. Nevertheless, the newspaper reported that consolidated net profit quadrupled year on year. The comparison highlights the importance of reading expenses alongside revenue when assessing the quarterly result. The report did not identify any specific expense item as the main driver of the profit increase.

The financial results follow SAIL's announcement of record operating levels in the first half of fiscal 2026-27. The company said its output of value-added steel reached about 2 million tonnes during April-September 2026, up 30% from the corresponding period. Crude steel production was 9.6 million tonnes over the same period, up 1% year on year. The company also said sales of saleable steel hit a September record of 1.69 million tonnes, up 4% from September 2025. These indicators provide operating context for the company's results, covering different periods: the first six months and the September quarter.

SAIL pointed to an improved product mix, with finished steel's share of total saleable steel production rising to 89.2% in April-September 2026, from 86.8% in the corresponding period of 2025. The company said iron ore sales reached 2.671 million tonnes in the first half, up 190% from the same period a year earlier. It also announced a reduction in borrowings of about 1,080 crore rupees during the first half of fiscal 2026-27. The company linked these developments to a record of operating achievements in the first half and in September. The chairman and managing director said the achievements reflect "the employees' commitment to efficiency, innovation and sustainable growth."
