Provident Financial Holdings reported adjusted earnings of $0.25 per share in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, ended September 30, missing the average analyst estimate of $0.32 by $0.07, according to data published by Investing.com. The result came as the company recorded growth in revenue and net interest income, highlighting a divergence between improvement in core banking activity and pressure from the credit-loss provision on earnings. Revenue was $10.57 million, above the estimate of $10.3 million. Net interest income also rose 9% to $9.77 million. However, growth in both items did not prevent net income from declining year over year.

The coverage attributed the earnings decline primarily to a $777,000 provision for credit losses during the quarter. That compares with a $626,000 recovery of credit losses in the same quarter of the prior year. The shift reflects a difference in accounting treatment between the two periods, as the company moved from recovering losses to recording a provision. Chief Executive Donavon Terrence said the higher provision was intended to build the allowance for losses, adding: "Credit quality remains excellent."

On the revenue side, the company’s revenue rose 9% to $10.57 million from $9.74 million a year earlier, topping the analyst estimate of $10.3 million. Net interest income increased by $840,000, or 9%, to $9.77 million, compared with $8.93 million in the corresponding quarter. Net interest margin widened to 3.32% from 3.00% a year earlier. The company linked the improvement to higher average yields on interest-earning assets and lower funding costs. The margin growth shows that improved returns on lending and funding activities coincided with a larger credit burden on earnings.

Loans held for investment totaled $1.04 billion on September 30, compared with $1.03 billion on June 30, while deposits fell 1% over the same period to $897.7 million from $910.4 million. Despite the quarterly decline in deposits, nonperforming assets remained at 0.04% of total assets, unchanged from the previous quarter. The efficiency ratio improved to 72% from 78% in the same period last year. These figures reflect an expansion in loans held for investment alongside a quarterly contraction in deposits. They also show that the nonperforming-asset indicator remained stable and the efficiency ratio improved compared with the prior year.

The results follow the company’s report of net income of $2.18 million and diluted earnings of $0.35 per share in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. Net income at the time was 61% higher than in the previous quarter and 34% above the year-earlier period. On October 22, Provident authorized a plan to repurchase up to 5% of its common shares, or approximately 305,477 shares, with the new plan to begin after the January 2026 plan is completed or expires. Before the current-quarter results were announced, the company’s shares closed at $18.14 on October 20, $18.20 on October 21, $18.19 on October 22 and $18.20 on October 23. On October 26, they closed at $18.16; these are prior-session prices and do not establish the results’ effect on subsequent trading.

The company is scheduled to discuss its results on a call for institutional investors and bank analysts on October 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time. The company will make an audio recording of the call available through November 4. The call provides an additional opportunity to present and discuss the results after the quarterly figures were released. The available information did not include further details about the company’s outlook for coming periods.
