MPLX’s general partner board declared a cash distribution of $1.2111 per common unit for the third quarter of 2026, equivalent to $4.84 on an annualized basis, according to a company statement published via PR Newswire. The move represents an increase of 12.5%, or $0.1346 per unit, from the second-quarter distribution. The decision comes as the company expects, under its previous guidance, to continue raising distributions by 12.5% in 2026 and 2027. That places the third-quarter announcement within a growth path previously outlined by management, with the current quarter’s results set to provide an opportunity to track the financial and operating performance behind that direction. MPLX shares closed at $58.65 on October 26, according to EL7 data.

The second-quarter distribution was $1.0765 per unit, or $4.31 on an annualized basis, according to MPLX investor relations. The company said at the time that the distribution would be paid on August 14 to unitholders of record on August 7. By comparison, the new announcement adds $0.1346 to the quarterly distribution per unit and raises the annualized rate from $4.31 to $4.84. This comparison shows the size of the increase between the two periods announced by the company, without making the annualized distribution a guaranteed rate for future periods. The current increase is also consistent with management’s previous guidance on distribution growth in 2026 and 2027.

The operating backdrop for growth presented by management was based on higher gathering and processing volumes in the second quarter. On the earnings call, the company said gathering volumes increased 15% year over year, driven mainly by production growth in the Utica, Permian and Marcellus basins. It added that processing volumes rose 5% from the same period a year earlier. These activities are part of the midstream infrastructure business, where the company’s services include gathering and processing energy resources, transportation and distribution services. The volume figures provide operating context for the distribution decision, alongside the financial indicators the company reported for the second quarter.

Net income attributable to MPLX was about $1.077 billion in the second quarter of 2026, compared with $1.048 billion in the second quarter of 2025, according to the company’s results. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose to $1.775 billion from $1.690 billion in the year-earlier period. The company also reported distributable cash flow of $1.450 billion in the second quarter, covering distributions 1.3 times. Leverage was 3.7 times at quarter-end. Together, these indicators show growth in income, earnings and cash flow, while the coverage ratio allows a comparison of the cash available for distribution with what the company paid during that quarter.

MPLX also links its distribution plans to growth investments and projects under development. It raised its 2026 growth capital spending outlook by $500 million to $2.9 billion, attributing the increase mainly to accelerated execution of a natural gas liquids fractionation project on the Gulf Coast to meet global demand. A near-term project is an expansion of sour gas processing capacity at the Titan complex in the Delaware Basin, from 150 million cubic feet per day to more than 400 million cubic feet per day. The company is targeting the expansion to enter service in the fourth quarter of 2026. These projects are part of a capital plan that the company said is aimed at expanding operating capacity, alongside its expectations for higher distributions.

MPLX describes itself as a large, diversified master limited partnership formed by Marathon Petroleum, owning and operating midstream energy infrastructure and logistics assets, as well as fuel distribution services. This context matters when assessing the distribution because the company’s operations span multiple assets and services, while second-quarter figures point to growth in gathering and processing volumes in U.S. producing basins. However, the distribution declared in dollars does not necessarily equal the net amount received by a non-U.S. investor. The company states that distributions to investors outside the United States are subject to federal income tax withholding at the highest applicable effective tax rate. Brokers are treated as withholding agents, according to the investor relations statement on the second-quarter distribution.

MPLX will host its third-quarter 2026 earnings conference on November 3 at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time, according to its investor relations website. The results follow the distribution announcement and will provide an opportunity to track the financial and operating performance for the period covered by the decision. Management had linked its guidance for distribution increases in 2026 and 2027 to expectations of mid-single-digit growth in adjusted earnings, as additional projects enter service and utilization rates rise. The conference is the company’s next announced date to present results and update information related to those expectations. Until then, the declared $1.2111 remains the scheduled third-quarter distribution, while future increases remain part of the guidance management previously announced.
