Cumberland Pharmaceuticals announced on October 26, 2026, its plan to submit a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for ifetroban, to treat cardiomyopathy associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The announcement followed a pre-submission meeting with the agency during fall 2026. In the same session, the company’s shares fell 48.76% to 4.350 dollars, compared with their previous close of 8.490 dollars. The stock opened at 7.760 dollars. The plan puts the company on a regulatory filing path despite the agency’s questions about the adequacy of the clinical data.

The company said the agency granted it a rolling review of the application, allowing completed sections to be submitted to regulators for review before the entire filing is complete. This mechanism allows review of parts of the application to begin in stages. It does not mean the application has been accepted for filing or that the drug has been approved. Cumberland said the agency requested additional analyses and supporting information after reviewing the pre-submission package. The company also acknowledged there is no guarantee the application will be accepted or ifetroban approved based on the data submitted.

The plan is based on the Phase 2 FIGHT DMD trial, which lasted 12 months. Cumberland said the high dose of ifetroban was associated with an absolute improvement of 5.4% in left ventricular ejection fraction compared with a pooled control group. The company said the result was statistically significant at p=0.002. It intends to submit the trial as the pivotal study in the application. The filing will also include comparative data from two natural history databases of Duchenne patients, along with a safety database covering more than 1,400 participants across about 30 clinical studies of the drug.

The Food and Drug Administration had previously proposed a placebo-controlled Phase 3 randomized trial. It raised questions about the suitability of left ventricular ejection fraction as a measure, the comparator used, and the statistical analysis plan for the Phase 2 results. After the pre-submission review, the agency requested additional supporting information and analyses and expressed concern about whether the data package was sufficient to demonstrate efficacy. The company said its current path is toward submitting the application, including the FIGHT DMD trial and the proposed comparative data. These regulatory questions remain central to assessing the filing’s prospects of advancing from submission to review and approval.

The FIGHT DMD trial began in October 2020 and was completed in January 2026, enrolling 46 participants. Study data indicated that enrollment closed before the target number was reached in the group of patients with more advanced cardiac disease. The program is part of a development portfolio Cumberland retained after selling its approved pharmaceutical products to Apotex. The company closed the deal on July 1, 2026, for 100 million dollars in cash, while retaining its development programs, including ifetroban. Cumberland said its portfolio includes four Phase 2 clinical programs.

After the Apotex deal, the company shifted its focus to its drug development pipeline, which includes programs for rare diseases. The deal had received the support of more than 99% of shares voted, according to the company’s disclosure. Cumberland recorded a loss from continuing operations of 3.1 million dollars in the second quarter of 2026 and a net loss of 4.1 million dollars after discontinued operations were included. This makes progress in the ifetroban program a prominent part of the company’s next phase following the sale of its portfolio of approved products. Available sources did not identify a direct reason for the share decline on October 26.

Cumberland had scheduled a conference call and webcast on October 26 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time to provide an update on the ifetroban program. The event gives the company an opportunity to explain its regulatory plan and trial data following the announcement. Acceptance of the drug application for filing or its approval remains uncertain, according to the company’s disclosure. Rolling review also allows completed sections to be submitted before the full application, without determining the regulatory outcome. The announcement did not specify another date for submitting the application.
