Coinbase Gives European Customers Until October 30 to Withdraw Stablecoins Affected by MiCA Rules

Key Facts

1The deadline to withdraw affected balances to an external wallet is October 30, 2026.
2Coinbase will convert remaining balances on October 30, 2026, at the market price at the time of execution.
3The transitional period for stablecoin issuers under MiCA ended on July 1, 2026.

Coinbase has set October 30, 2026, as the deadline for its retail customers in the European Economic Area to withdraw balances in stablecoins the platform no longer supports, saying any remaining balances will be converted automatically that day. The notice applies to retail customers served by Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., which is licensed under the MiCA regulation by Luxembourg’s financial regulator. The company says it can no longer support stablecoins whose issuers have not obtained authorization under the European regulation. Until the deadline, Coinbase allows withdrawals to an external wallet where supported. Purchases, sales and conversions of the affected assets through the platform are restricted, making withdrawal the available option for customers who wish to continue holding them.

The list provided by Coinbase includes USDT and PYUSD, along with PAX, GUSD, GYEN, DAI, BUST, UST, RAI, PAXG, MUSD, USD1, USDS and TGBP. The move therefore extends beyond the two currencies highlighted in initial coverage to other assets linked to the dollar or to different currencies and assets. Withdrawals to an external wallet remain possible until October 30, according to the company’s notice, subject to support for the asset and network. After that date, new deposits of these assets will not be treated as balances available for normal use on the platform. Coinbase urged customers to complete any withdrawals they wish to make before the deadline.

On October 30, the platform will process any remaining balance at the prevailing market price at the time of conversion, rather than at a fixed price set in advance. USDC will be the destination for the conversion when Coinbase deems it appropriate, while the balance may be converted into another supported crypto asset or currency if USDC is unsuitable. These terms tie the value a customer receives to the market price at the time of execution and to the asset the platform selects under its stated suitability standard. Coinbase said assets sent after October 30 will not be credited to the account or appear in the balance, and will not be available for trading, conversion or transfer. Those deposits will also be excluded from the automatic conversion process and may be unrecoverable; the company says recovery may be possible in some cases, without guaranteeing it.

Coinbase places the measure in the context of the end of the transitional period for stablecoin issuers under MiCA on July 1, 2026, saying the period was not extended. The company says the end of that period means it can no longer support stablecoins whose issuers are unauthorized under the regulation. At the European regulatory level, the European Securities and Markets Authority said crypto-asset service providers licensed under MiCA should stop providing services related to non-compliant stablecoins to EU customers. The authority’s guidance sets out its supervisory expectations for service providers and does not describe the measure as enforcement by the European Banking Authority against Coinbase. The guidance, according to the information provided, indicated a period of up to three months to address exposures; that is a broader supervisory period than the operational deadline Coinbase set for its customers.

Coinbase warned that converting one crypto asset into another may be a taxable event in some jurisdictions, and said customers are responsible for determining and meeting their tax obligations. This means the automatic conversion may have tax implications depending on the rules applicable to each customer, even if the conversion was not initiated by them. The company also said it would reassess support for any affected stablecoin if it became MiCA-compliant. But a future review of support will not reverse a conversion that has already been completed, according to Coinbase. The current deadline therefore remains tied to withdrawing before October 30, while any later support update will not change the fate of a balance that has already been converted.
