Chainlink Unveils CustodySync to Open DeFi Lending to Nearly $700 Billion in Custodied Assets
Key Facts
Chainlink announced CustodySync on October 26, a service that enables qualified custodians to open decentralized finance lending markets to their institutional clients while assets remain in custody. The company positions the product at the intersection of regulated custody infrastructure and DeFi markets that rely on collateral and onchain data. It said the solution is designed to synchronize custodians’ systems with lending protocols throughout the loan lifecycle. Anchorage Digital Bank is participating in the launch as the first qualified custodian to build the service. The announcement comes as Chainlink says the value of custodied digital assets is nearly $700 billion, a scale it sees as creating room to connect more assets to decentralized finance markets.
Chainlink’s figures point to a wide gap between the volume of digital assets held by custodians and the traditional market: digital assets totaling about $700 billion represent less than 0.5% of the $250 trillion in traditional assets in custody. By comparison, the company says DeFi lending markets have more than $80 billion in deposits and more than $30 billion in active loans. These figures link a large pool of assets managed by institutional custodians with an onchain lending market that is already operating. CustodySync aims to make those assets available as loan collateral without taking them out of custody. The custody and lending estimates date to the company’s October 26 announcement.
The service begins by publishing the custodian’s asset balance onchain through Chainlink Proof of Reserve. The collateral is then represented by a transfer-restricted receipt token, which is used in the lending market to represent the collateral without moving the underlying asset from the custodian. The market relies on Chainlink Data Feeds to provide asset prices onchain, while Data Streams delivers the same values to the custodian’s offchain systems. According to Chainlink, using a unified price source allows the loan-to-value ratio to be calculated on the basis of data consistent between the two parties. The design addresses a core operational challenge in linking custody records with lending decisions and risk management.
Chainlink says differences in price data or collateral balances between the custody system and the protocol could produce two opposite errors: liquidating a position the custodian considers sound, or delaying liquidation until the collateral is insufficient to cover the loan. When a loan exceeds the specified liquidation threshold, the designated collateral agent sells the assets according to its own procedures. CustodySync records the committed sale proceeds onchain until final settlement is completed. The service therefore does not prevent liquidation; it coordinates the information and processes involved. Nathan McCauley, Anchorage Digital’s chief executive and co-founder, said clients “will keep their assets in regulated custody while we monitor loan health and manage margin and liquidation throughout the loan lifecycle.”
The Chainlink Runtime Environment coordinates systems, including monitoring the custodian’s collateral management system, carrying out authorized actions and recording loan activity again with the custodian. Chainlink describes the environment as a tool for automating synchronization between systems, while the service relies on the existing infrastructure of the custodian and participating lending markets. Anchorage uses its Atlas Collateral Management product to work with lending markets; the company’s guide describes it as an agency service for institutional lenders and borrowers in cryptocurrency-collateralized transactions. Atlas combines regulated custody with automated risk monitoring. CustodySync follows Chainlink’s September announcement of Fulcrum, a financing and collateral management solution across public and private chains, which the company said at the time was being integrated with leading financial environments ahead of its launch.
As part of the expansion of the institutional infrastructure it is developing, Chainlink said in its third-quarter review, published on October 21, that more than $15 billion in token value had moved through CCIP during 2026, and that the value of cross-chain assets secured by the solution had exceeded $85 billion. As for LINK, EL7 data show the token closed at $12.332 on October 20, while Investing.com data recorded a price of $11.335 on October 26. These are dated readings from different days and do not, on their own, establish a technical support level or explain the price movement. The CustodySync announcement did not specify a date for broader availability and noted that the service’s features may vary among custodians. Chainlink invited interested custodians, lending markets and risk coordinators to contact its team to get started.
