Spain’s Industrial Producer Prices Jump 18.3% Year on Year in September
Key Facts
Industrial producer prices in Spain rose 18.3% in the 12 months through September 2026, compared with an annual increase of 13.2% in the period through August, according to Reuters. The comparison shows the pace of annual growth accelerated between the two months. Month on month, prices rose 4% in September from August, according to the same report. The index measures prices of industrial products manufactured and sold on the domestic market at the first stage of marketing. It covers industrial sectors excluding construction, according to the definition of Spain’s National Statistics Institute.
The September reading means the annual increase in producer prices came alongside a marked monthly rise, while the index measures prices at an early stage of commercial marketing. Its scope therefore differs from the consumer price index, which tracks prices faced by households. In its preliminary estimate of Spanish consumer inflation in September, the institute attributed the rise in prices to fuel and lubricants for private vehicles, after those prices fell in September 2025. It also said prices for package holidays fell at a slower pace than in the same month of the previous year. These factors relate to the institute’s explanation of consumer inflation; the available information did not cite them as reasons for the increase in producer prices.
The producer price index is based on sectoral weights covering energy, intermediate goods and consumer goods, according to the institute’s 2025 data. Energy accounted for 32.27% of the index weights, compared with 27.63% for intermediate goods and 27.65% for consumer goods. These weights show each category’s presence in the index composition, but do not by themselves determine any category’s contribution to September’s increase. The index covers industrial products sold on the domestic market and excludes construction. The producer price reading therefore reflects price movements for these products at the first stage of marketing, not the course of consumer prices directly.
Attention in the coming days is turning to the calendar of data releases and monetary policy decisions scheduled for the end of October. The European Central Bank’s Governing Council will hold its monetary policy meeting in Frankfurt on 28 and 29 October 2026. Monetary policy decisions are scheduled to be published on 29 October at 14:15 Central European Time, followed by a news conference at 14:45, according to the bank’s calendar. The next day, 30 October, Spain’s institute will release the preliminary estimate of the consumer price index for October. The release date does not include an inflation forecast; it only sets the timing for publication of the preliminary estimate.
