Wavelength Accounts Capped at 300,000 Satoshis as Tool Goes Live on Bitcoin Mainnet

Key Facts

1Wavelength account balances on the mainnet are capped at 300,000 satoshis, with a limit of 50,000 satoshis for each balance unit.
2Lightning payments carry a 0.25% service fee on sending and receiving, in addition to the usual routing fees.
3The balance needs a quick refresh approximately every two weeks to remain ready for self-custody exit.
4Lightning Labs said Wavelength was still in alpha when it became available on the mainnet.

Lightning Labs has made its Wavelength tool available on the Bitcoin mainnet, setting an account balance cap of 300,000 satoshis in a move that opens bitcoin payments to users and AI agents. The company said both can send and receive bitcoin through the tool, while support for stablecoins remains in development. An agent can use its balance to pay for an API call, a data feed or a service provided by another agent. The mainnet launch allows the tool to be used for real payments, while the company described the product as still being in alpha. EL7 published a story on July 22, 2026, about the launch of Wavelength’s alpha version.

Lightning Labs says agents can make payments over the Lightning Network without a card or account and without a person approving each transaction. The mechanism is aimed at cases where software needs to buy a digital resource or service while running, including paying for a single request or specific data. The company added that developers do not need to run a node, manage payment channels or provide liquidity to use Wavelength. The wallet can be operated through tool calls, allowing an agent to interact with it using defined commands. The tool therefore combines payments and the use of digital services within an automated workflow, according to the company.

The company set the mainnet account cap at 300,000 satoshis, while the limit for each balance unit is 50,000 satoshis. This distinguishes the account’s overall limit from the limit applied to each unit, defining the scope of use available at launch. Lightning payments carry a 0.25% service fee on both sending and receiving, in addition to the network’s usual routing fees. This means the cost of a payment is not limited to the stated service fee, as routing fees are added. These limits and fees set the terms for using the tool financially in its current phase, according to details from Lightning Labs.

Lightning Labs says the user retains the wallet keys and can move the balance to the Bitcoin chain at any time without seeking permission. It added that the coordination service has no unilateral control over the funds and that balance settlement takes place through a layer similar to the Ark protocol. The company also provides credentials that allow the service to receive payments only, without permission to sign, recover or manage the wallet. An open protocol also enables API requests to be priced in satoshis and authenticated through Lightning without registration or an access key. These features offer separate options for payments, receiving funds and key management, according to the company.

Updates announced by the company included wallet recovery from a recovery phrase, preventing a request from being paid twice when retried, and resuming exit operations after an interruption. It said funds need a quick refresh approximately every two weeks to remain ready for self-custody exit. The refresh is automatic and free during the refresh window, according to the company. If the wallet remains offline after that window ends, Lightning Labs said the funds are not lost and can be recovered when the client returns. Self-exit readiness is therefore tied to periodic refreshes, with recovery available later if the wallet cannot connect during the required period.

Wavelength’s launch comes as its infrastructure has been developing for years. A Fidelity Digital Assets document says the Lightning Network was fully launched in 2018 and that adoption gained momentum in 2024. The report said the network had been integrated into major U.S. platforms, including Kraken and Coinbase. Average Lightning channel capacity in bitcoin also rose 118% during the period covered by the report, alongside a 30% decline in the average number of channels per node. Average peer-to-peer channel capacity increased 214% over the four years before the September 2024 measurement. Lightning Labs said stablecoins through Taproot Assets are still forthcoming, and that later releases will add the ability to hold funds in Lightning channels, without specifying a timeline.
