Lido launches 0x02 module with an effective balance of up to 2,048 ether per validator

Key Facts

1The 0x02 module became available on mainnet on 23 October 2026.
2The maximum effective balance for a 0x02 validator is 2,048 ether, compared with 32 ether in 0x01.
3The bond is 32 ether for the first key and 30 ether for each subsequent key.
4The staking share starts at 0.01% of Lido Core’s total value locked, with an additional queue that can accommodate 32 validators.
5Ether’s dollar close fell from $2,408.01 on 19 October to $2,318.5 on 26 October 2026.

Lido announced that the 0x02 Community Staking Module went live on mainnet on 23 October 2026, opening a permissionless path to operate Ethereum validators. The module allows a validator to reach an effective balance of 2,048 ether, compared with a maximum of 32 ether per validator in the previous 0x01 module. Reaching the higher balance does not happen upon registration: the key starts with a 32 ether bootstrap deposit, and the validator can receive an additional stake after activation. This arrangement is at the heart of the change announced by Lido: allowing a larger validator to operate while the protocol allocates its stake, rather than requiring the operator to fund the entire amount. The company describes the module as an open path for operators, while capacity at launch remains limited and subject to gradual expansion.

Operating the module requires a bond of 32 ether for the first key and 30 ether for each subsequent key, according to Lido. The operator provides this bond, while the protocol allocates the validator’s stake; the bond should therefore not be confused with the bootstrap deposit required to enter Ethereum’s deposit queue. Keys await an initial deposit of 32 ether before entering that queue, and a validator becomes eligible for additional staking only after activation. The mechanism also gives bootstrap deposits priority over additional staking, making access to the maximum balance dependent on the sequence of deposit and activation stages. The higher balance limit therefore allows a larger stake per validator, but does not mean every key will immediately receive the full possible stake.

Lido estimates the capital efficiency multiplier at full effective balances at about 2.18 times for the first validator, rising to nearly 2.26 times as validators are added. The company’s estimate includes rebasing rewards on the bond and ties the measure to the ability to use the bond to operate validators that receive stake allocated by the protocol. Lido says larger balances allow rewards to accrue and stake to be consolidated across fewer validators. Its documentation says reducing the number of validators could ease the burden on the consensus layer, in the context of future improvements such as faster finality. The broader technical direction stems from the EIP-7251 proposal, which sought to raise the maximum effective balance and reduce the number of validators, network messages and signatures being aggregated.

The module starts with a staking share limit of 0.01% of Lido Core’s total value locked, and an additional-staking queue with capacity for 32 validators. The first batch targets bootstrap deposits for about 32 keys, keeping the initial expansion limited relative to the maximum possible balance per validator. After the first batch receives its bootstrap deposits and the validators are activated, the Community Staking Module Committee intends to propose raising the share limit through an Easy Track motion. Additional staking remains dependent on sufficient flows into the protocol, according to Lido’s announcement. The combined cap for the 0x01 and 0x02 modules is 20% of Lido Core’s locked value as a future maximum, not the current share level.

The 0x01 and 0x02 modules operate in parallel, and current operators do not need to migrate to the new module. There is no native migration that merges 0x01 validators into 0x02, according to Lido, leaving operators the option to continue using the previous module. The 0x02 offers one permissionless path, while 0x01 includes default and curated paths, with curated-path privileges remaining in place. The expansion comes as Ethereum’s validator base grows: the EIP-7251 proposal noted that the number of participants had exceeded 830,000 validators on 3 October 2023. In the daily closing data provided by EL7, ether fell against the dollar from $2,408.01 on 19 October to $2,318.5 on 26 October 2026.
