KLA’s backlog stood at about $12.57 billion on June 30, 2026, compared with $7.86 billion on the same date a year earlier, according to its annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company attributed the increase to “strong demand driven by AI infrastructure buildout.” The balance puts AI-related demand growth at the center of the company’s performance. KLA provides process-control solutions for semiconductor manufacturing. But KLA cautioned that the value of orders at a specific date does not show when the resulting revenue will be recognized. It also said orders may be amended, deferred or canceled.

The balance consists primarily of written sales orders received by the company, according to KLA’s disclosure. The company says the metric “does not provide meaningful information about the timing of future revenue recognition,” limiting its use as a direct estimate of near-term revenue. A recorded order does not mean revenue will appear in a particular period, and customers may change their schedules or cancel orders. The company therefore frames the increase as a measure of demand, while treating the timing of order fulfillment and revenue recognition as a separate matter. That caveat matters when comparing the backlog with realized quarterly financial results.

For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, KLA reported total revenue of $3.658 billion, up from $3.415 billion in the third quarter of the same fiscal year and $3.175 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. The comparison shows sequential growth between the last two quarters, as well as an increase from the year-earlier period. These figures are revenue realized during specific periods, unlike the backlog, which represents outstanding sales orders as of the reporting date. Distinguishing between the two measures clarifies the difference between activity already reflected in financial results and orders whose timing of conversion into revenue remains unspecified. KLA did not link the backlog’s value to a specific revenue-recognition schedule in its annual disclosure.

Chief Executive Rick Wallace tied part of the business outlook to the expansion of AI infrastructure and the growing complexity of logic and memory designs, two factors that increase demand for process-control solutions. He said growth indicators were strengthening and that momentum across the company’s businesses “accelerates in the second half of 2026 and continues through 2027.” The view links demand for the company’s solutions to changing chip-manufacturing requirements, with the executive’s outlook extending beyond the second half of the year. The comments represent KLA management’s guidance on expected momentum, while the backlog is a figure recorded at the end of the fiscal year. Each reflects a different aspect of the company’s view of its business.

At Citi’s Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference in September, KLA officials said customers’ shipment visibility extended through 2027 and, in some cases, into early 2028. They said the typical time from order to delivery ranges from 12 to 18 months, with longer periods for some tools. These timelines help explain why the date an order is recorded does not necessarily match its delivery or revenue period. The stated shipment horizons also provide additional context for the demand the company said was driven by AI infrastructure buildout. That visibility remains tied to customer schedules and the delivery timelines cited by company officials.

For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, KLA forecast revenue of between $3.80 billion and $4.20 billion and GAAP diluted earnings per share of between $1.04 and $1.24. These are forward-looking figures, not realized results, and provide a published range that can later be compared with actual performance. The company reported revenue of $3.658 billion for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, the closest point of comparison in its published results. In the Oct. 23, 2026, session, KLAC shares closed at $145.61, according to EL7 data. The stock had fallen about 9% in extended trading on July 28 after the results and guidance were announced, despite fourth-quarter revenue topping analysts’ expectations; Reuters reported that the results fell short of investors’ expectations.
