JetBlue shares fell 15.9% to $2.21 in morning trading on October 26, reaching a new 52-week low of $2.16, according to Investing.com. The decline followed reports that a group of the company’s major creditors had hired a restructuring adviser and a law firm to help address its debt. The move does not mean the company has filed for bankruptcy, but it puts creditor action at the forefront of pressures facing the stock. EL7 data showed the shares closed at $2.63 on October 23, down from $2.93 on October 21. The stock closed at $2.65 on October 22, its lowest level since the company went public in 2002, according to Bloomberg Law.

The creditor group includes holders of $2 billion in bonds due in 2031 and lenders that provided a $742 million first-lien loan, according to Bloomberg Law. The 2031 bonds fell to 72 cents on the dollar on October 8, their lowest level since they were issued in August 2024. By October 22, the same bonds were trading at about 40 cents on the dollar, according to TRACE data cited by Bloomberg Law. This trajectory shows a deterioration in investors’ valuation of the company’s debt alongside the decline in its shares. The creditors hired restructuring adviser PJT Partners and law firm Akin Gump, according to Investing.com.

JetBlue had $1.66 billion in cash and cash equivalents on June 30, 2026, against $8.5 billion in debt and finance lease obligations, according to Reuters. In its second-quarter filing, the company reported $1.656 billion in cash and cash equivalents and total debt of $8.478 billion on the same date. The company said unrestricted cash and investment securities totaled $2.2 billion, in addition to an undrawn $600 million credit facility. JetBlue estimated that its liquidity resources would cover its needs for at least 12 months from the report date. It also said that about 67% of the net book value of its property and equipment and intangible assets was pledged or committed to be pledged as collateral for loans.

The company faces a growing burden from operating and fuel costs. Operating revenue in the second quarter of 2026 rose 14.5% year over year to $2.7 billion, but operating expenses increased 20.8% to $2.8 billion, according to JetBlue’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company reported an operating loss of $141 million, compared with operating income of $6 million in the same period of 2025; it attributed the wider loss to higher expenses, particularly fuel prices. Average fuel cost also rose to $4.23 per gallon, up 76.3% year over year from $2.40 in the second quarter of 2025. Reuters said higher jet fuel expenses linked to the Iran war pressured U.S. airlines’ margins despite higher ticket prices and stable travel demand.

In its filing, JetBlue said it had no fuel hedging contracts outstanding on June 30, 2026. The company, meanwhile, expressed confidence in its JetForward strategy and the progress made toward a return to sustainable profitability, according to Reuters. The remarks come as elevated operating costs coincide with declines in the stock and bonds, while creditors move to hire advisers. The company is scheduled to hold its third-quarter results conference on October 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. The conference will be a near-term opportunity to present the period’s results and update management’s outlook on liquidity, fuel and the JetForward plan.
