Coinbase plans to convert affected stablecoin balances remaining in European Economic Area retail customer accounts on October 30, 2026, after allowing withdrawals through that date, according to the platform’s help page. Settlement will be at the market price when the conversion is executed, into USDC where appropriate. The company said any remaining balance will be converted automatically, making the deadline critical for customers who want to keep the affected assets in another form or move them to an external wallet. The measure applies only to Coinbase’s retail service in the European Economic Area. The company links it to its inability to support assets whose issuers have not obtained a license under MiCA.

The assets Coinbase named include USDT, PAX, PYUSD, GUSD, GYEN, DAI, BUST, UST, RAI, PAXG, MUSD, USD1, USDS and TGBP. If USDC is not suitable for settlement, the company says the balance may be converted into another supported crypto asset or currency. The move follows the end of the MiCA transition period for stablecoin issuers on July 1, 2026, which Coinbase says was not extended. The company says it can no longer support currencies whose issuers have not obtained the required license. The page classifies the affected assets as electronic money tokens or asset-referenced tokens under the European framework.

Ahead of the deadline, Coinbase is restricting the purchase, sale and transfer of these assets on its platform, and says withdrawing them to an external wallet is the available option for those who want to continue holding them. The measure therefore does not mean, according to the company’s details, that holding the assets themselves is prohibited; it sets out what retail customers can do with them through Coinbase’s service. The company says any affected asset sent to the platform after October 30 will not be added to the account or appear in the balance. It will not be available for trading, conversion or transfer, and will not be included in the automatic conversion. Coinbase says recovery of assets sent after the deadline may be technically possible, but is not guaranteed.

Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. provides crypto asset services to customers in the European Economic Area and is authorized under MiCA as a crypto asset service provider by Luxembourg’s financial regulator, according to the company’s page. The measure distinguishes between the service provider’s authorization and the status of issuers of the affected currencies: Coinbase says issuers’ failure to obtain a MiCA license is why it cannot support those currencies. The company also warns that converting one crypto asset into another may be a taxable event in some jurisdictions. Customers are responsible for determining and meeting their tax obligations. Coinbase shares closed at $164.45 on October 23, 2026, compared with a close of $169.09 the previous day; these prices alone are insufficient to establish a link between the move and the conversion announcement.
