A software vulnerability in certain Bitcoin wallet implementations allowed attackers to replace legitimate transactions with fake ones and steal funds. CoinDesk reported that the bug occurs when users attempt to increase fees using the 'Replace-By-Fee' (RBF) feature to speed up transactions, enabling rogue servers to intercept and redirect funds.
Developers confirmed at least one instance of theft linked to this exploit before a software patch was released to fix the vulnerability. The bug impacts trust in cryptocurrency self-custody solutions, as attackers were able to present fake transactions to users during the fee-bumping process to gain approval and facilitate the theft.
