Crosslink Testing Continues Under Plan Extending Through Q2 2027
Key Facts
Zcash’s Crosslink project remains in development and testing, according to the Shielded Labs roadmap and the OpenZcash guide. Available information does not establish that a developer has stopped discussions or that the community has withdrawn its support. The Shielded Labs roadmap lists a production phase running from Q2 2026 through Q2 2027, including deployment on a testnet and development based on participant feedback. The OpenZcash guide directs users to download version v15 to test staking and finality on a testnet using cTAZ. This means the project is proceeding through a disclosed testing process, while a decision on activating it on mainnet remains subject to Zcash governance. The published schedule does not set a final date for that activation.
Crosslink proposes adding a finality layer to the network without replacing its current mining mechanism. Shielded Labs says Zcash will remain a proof-of-work blockchain and that block production will continue under that mechanism after the proposed design is introduced. Proof of stake, meanwhile, would be part of a layer intended to establish transaction finality, rather than take over block production entirely. The proposed design places the project in a hybrid framework combining two mechanisms for different functions within the network. Shielded Labs’ explanation therefore does not describe a shift from Zcash mining to a proof-of-stake system.
The development roadmap sets out successive stages before any decision on mainnet, with a network upgrade candidate targeted for Q1 2027. Shielded Labs says reaching that stage does not mean Crosslink will be activated on mainnet, and the mainnet deployment stage is listed without a specific date. The company says protocol changes occur only if they receive broad support and the ecosystem chooses to adopt them. It also says testnets and network upgrade candidates are tools for improving clarity and reducing uncertainty, but they do not determine the activation outcome. Adoption of the upgrade therefore remains a later decision tied to governance, the community’s position and coin holders.
The testnet lets participants try staking and finality through version v15, announced on October 13, 2026. The OpenZcash guide says the release schedules activation at block height 55296 to address a stalled proposal state and validator rewards. In an earlier update dated May 29, Shielded Labs described failures, synchronization issues, halted finality and other errors that had surfaced during development. It explained that the finality mechanism may halt finalization when secure consensus cannot be reached, prioritizing ledger safety over continued finalization in unsafe conditions. It added that the network may continue producing blocks even when a Byzantine fault-tolerant finality mechanism halts, separating continued test activity from the establishment of transaction finality.
Shielded Labs is supporting testing with financial incentives for participants, allocating 500 ZEC in total to incentive testnets, with 25 ZEC for the first season, according to its announcement published on April 2, 2026. The second-round report, published on October 15, recorded payments of 25 ZEC. Of that amount, 19.954 ZEC went to mining and staking, while 5.046 ZEC was allocated to discretionary rewards. These payments show activity under the testing program and do not represent a decision to activate the upgrade on mainnet. The move from trials to protocol adoption remains subject to governance and broad support from the community and coin holders.
In the market, ZEC/USD closed at $1,194.31 on October 25, 2026, compared with a close of $1,208 on October 24, according to EL7 data. The closing data do not link the move to a developer statement or a specific development in the Crosslink project. The next milestone listed on the project roadmap remains a network upgrade candidate in Q1 2027. The published plan gives no specific date for mainnet deployment. Until then, version v15 testing continues within the production phase scheduled through Q2 2027.
