Southwest Profit Jumps to $730 Million in Nine Months as Revenue Expands
Key Facts
Southwest Airlines increased net income to $730 million in the nine months ended September 30, 2026, from $118 million in the year-earlier period, according to results published on October 21. Third-quarter net income alone was $270 million, compared with $54 million a year earlier. The results came as revenue expanded and the operating margin improved, while the company continued to adjust its commercial offerings. CEO Bob Jordan said, "Customers are responding to Southwest's enhanced offerings." He added that demand remained strong, noting that it continued to be strong in the fourth quarter.
Operating revenue was $8.4 billion in the third quarter, up 21.2% year over year, which the company said was a record. The operating margin rose to 4.5% from 0.5% in the third quarter of 2025. Passenger revenue also increased 22.8% year over year, or $1.4 billion, driven by a higher share of customers choosing higher-priced fare benefits. Ancillary revenue included fees for bags, assigned seats and extra-legroom seats. The company linked the growth to changes in its fare and product mix, while capacity fell 0.4% during the quarter.
Operating revenue per available seat reached a company record, rising 21.6% from the third quarter of the previous year. That came despite a 0.4% decline in capacity, reflecting an increase in revenue per available seat during the period. Assigned seating and extra-legroom seats became part of the travel experience on January 27, 2026. The results show that these options, along with bag fees and higher-priced fare benefits, have become part of the products contributing to passenger revenue. The lounge network announced by the company is a future step and was not an operating service during the results period.
Improved operating earnings came alongside a significant fuel burden. Fuel and related tax expenses increased $821 million compared with the third quarter of 2025. The company said the increase weighed $1.08 on adjusted earnings per share. That figure isolates the cost pressure the company faced from revenue growth and shows that results improved despite higher fuel expense. The company does not attribute earnings growth solely to lounges or credit cards; its disclosure attributed passenger revenue growth to higher-priced fare benefits and ancillary products.
Southwest also expanded its Rapid Rewards program, announcing a new Platinum tier, Milestone awards and new redemption partners. The company announced its Southwest Icon lounge network, with the first visitors expected in 2027. That timeline places the lounges at a later stage of the commercial transformation, after assigned seating and extra-legroom seats began in January 2026. The current-period results are therefore tied to products already in place, while the lounges represent a future development. The company's announcement did not indicate that the lounges contributed to earnings in the nine-month period or the third quarter.
The company expects adjusted earnings per share of between $2.60 and $2.85 for 2026, and between $0.55 and $0.80 in the fourth quarter. The guidance indicates the results the company is targeting for the rest of the year, as management describes demand as strong. Southwest will present its multiyear financial framework and targets at its Capital Markets Day in New York on March 2, 2027. The company's shares, listed under the ticker LUV, closed at $41.75 on October 23, 2026. The closing price came after the results announcement; the available data here does not include a higher intraday price or a comparison of the stock's move.
