Shoprite and Investec are in talks about a potential partnership to expand the financial services offered by the retailer, according to a Moneyweb report citing Bloomberg. People familiar with the discussions said talks are ongoing and the structure of any agreement remains under consideration. They added that there is no guarantee a deal will be reached. Shoprite is considering expanding its financial offerings without becoming a full-service bank, the report said. That frames the talks as a potential collaboration between a retailer and a financial institution, rather than an announced agreement between the two parties.

Investec could provide the technology and regulatory expertise needed to expand Shoprite’s offerings, alongside licensed lending services, according to the report. Shoprite Chief Executive Peter Engelbrecht said in an interview on 1 September that the company is pursuing customer transactions. “We are not bankers, we are retailers,” he said, adding that “full banking, in my opinion, is best left to the bankers.” The comment reflects the limits management sets for its role in the financial sector. It does not determine the form of a potential partnership or the scope of services it might include.

Shoprite already has an established financial business through its Money Market account, which allows customers to deposit, withdraw and transfer money, and make payments and purchases. The company said 4.3 million customers used the account in the 2026 financial year, while the account provides basic banking services to more than 4 million customers. Other digital transactions are free, while cash withdrawals cost 5 rand, and there are no monthly fees. Shoprite also works with African Bank on some day-to-day banking services linked to the account. The company tested a Mastercard debit card linked to it, according to the report.

Shoprite did not comment on the talks and said information about commercial partnerships would be announced to the market when available. Investec said it does not comment on speculation, leaving details of any potential collaboration unresolved. In the stock market, Investec shares closed at 595.5 pence on 23 October 2026, compared with a close of 592 pence in the previous session, according to EL7 data. Shoprite plans to publish its first-quarter 2027 financial-year operational update through the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s disclosure platform before its annual meeting scheduled for 6 November 2026. The company said the update was expected in late October, based on the timing of the previous year.
