BYD Seal 6 discount nears 38% as average plug-in hybrid discount reaches 20.3%

Key Facts

1The BYD Seal 6 discount nears 38% of its list price in October 2026.
2The average discount for the 20 best-selling plug-in hybrid cars was 20.3% in October 2026.
3The European Union registered 1,931,465 battery-electric cars in January-September 2026, with a 22.7% market share.
4The agreement sets a cap of 350,000 Chinese hybrid imports a year for 4 years, with an annual increase of 6%.

The discount offered on the BYD Seal 6 in Germany came to nearly 38% of its list price in October, exceeding the average 20.3% discount for the 20 best-selling plug-in hybrid cars, according to a study by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), cited by finanzen.net from dpa-AFX. The study found diverging trends among German manufacturers and dealers, who slightly increased discounts on internal combustion and plug-in hybrid cars while cutting discounts on electric vehicles. The figures place BYD’s offer among discounts on a specific model and do not represent the market average or a uniform discount across all versions of the car. The figures come as electric and hybrid vehicle registrations expand in major European markets, although growth rates vary by technology and country. Europe is also moving to cap imports of hybrids made in China, a step that could change the terms for Chinese cars entering the market.

CAR’s comparison is based on advertised prices for the 25 best-selling cars in each category, according to finanzen.net’s account of dpa-AFX. This means the 20.3% average applies to the best-selling plug-in hybrid cars, while the Seal 6 figure refers to the discount off that model’s list price. The average recorded price gap between electric vehicles and internal combustion cars widened to more than 2,900 euros in October, from 1,328 euros in December 2025, when fuel prices were much lower. “Higher fuel prices allow slightly higher prices for electric cars,” said CAR study director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer. His comment puts the widening price gap in the context of fuel prices, without identifying a reason for BYD’s discount on the Seal 6.

Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) show that battery-electric vehicle registrations in the European Union reached 1,931,465 in the first nine months of 2026, accounting for 22.7% of the market. In Germany, battery-electric vehicle registrations rose 58.1% over the same period, while plug-in hybrid registrations increased 13.7%. By contrast, new gasoline car registrations in Germany fell 22.7% compared with the same period in 2025. German September data, however, show a different monthly picture for plug-in hybrids: 27,681 cars were registered, unchanged year on year, while total new passenger car registrations reached 256,774, up 9%. The figures reflect differing trends by engine type and the time period used for comparison.

Chinese hybrid car imports into the European Union face a prospective trade restriction. A Reuters report carried by MarketScreener said the agreement between the bloc and China sets an annual cap of 350,000 cars, with an annual increase of 6%, for four years. The report said the cap is expected to take effect in early December 2026. It also said Chinese hybrid exports to the bloc were on track to reach 800,000 cars in 2026, and that the market share of cars made in China could fall to about 6% from 12% currently after the measure takes effect. This regulatory development provides context for BYD’s European market without linking the cap to the German Seal 6 discount.

BYD is advertising a financing example in Germany for the Seal 6 DM-i Touring Boost, with a purchase price of 42,990 euros that includes a discount of 11,010 euros, according to the company’s German website. The offer is available at participating dealers through December 31, 2026. The company previously said its new registrations in Germany rose about 708% in 2025, from around 3,000 cars in 2024 to 23,360 cars. It added that its German sales and service network expanded from 26 locations at the start of 2025 to 150 at year-end, with a target of 350 locations by the end of 2026. The company’s previous figures show the model’s presence in the plug-in hybrid segment: it said the Seal 6 DM-i Touring ranked fourth in German registrations in November 2025, while the Seal U DM-i topped the list.

The company’s price cuts date back to before October: in June 2026, BYD announced an additional summer bonus of between 500 and 3,000 euros for selected models, alongside its electric car bonus, with the campaign due to end on August 31. In Germany, September data cited by the VDA automotive industry association showed plug-in hybrid registrations unchanged year on year, alongside growth in the overall market. The next European passenger car registration data, for October, are scheduled for publication by ACEA on November 24, 2026. Before then, the ifo Institute will release its German business climate index for October on October 26 at 10:30 Central European Time. These dates put market and economic indicators among the upcoming releases, without predetermining their effect on car offers.
