Yara Posts Third-Quarter Adjusted Operating Profit of $675 Million, Below Expectations
Key Facts
Yara reported adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $675 million in the third quarter of 2026, about 10% below analysts’ estimate of $752 million, according to Investing.com. That came despite group sales exceeding the average forecast, combining strong revenue with weak operating profitability. Sales were $4,478 million, compared with a consensus estimate of $4,247 million. But total deliveries fell 4% year on year in the quarter. The company said higher gas prices and continued demand delays weighed on margins and deliveries.
A year-on-year comparison of earnings showed that energy costs reduced adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization by $165 million. Improved pricing partly offset the impact, adding $95 million, according to Investing.com. By contrast, the volume and mix effect reduced earnings by $40 million. These components indicate that pricing was not enough to offset the impact of energy costs, lower volumes and sales mix. The pressures are consistent with Yara’s comments on the effects of gas prices and delayed demand on the quarter’s margins and deliveries.
On demand, Yara pointed to a recovery in European nitrate volumes during the quarter, while global purchases for the 2027 season remained well behind levels in previous years. The contrast places the company’s performance in a market where one regional market improved while global purchasing remained delayed. The company said continued demand delays weighed on deliveries alongside higher gas prices. Yara said the recovery in European nitrate volumes did not dispel the impact of delayed global purchases. This means the increase in overall sales relative to expectations did not translate into higher year-on-year deliveries.
On liquidity, operating cash flow was $365 million in the third quarter, compared with $343 million in the same period a year earlier, according to Investing.com. Interest-bearing net debt was $2,765 million in the third quarter of 2026. These figures put cash flow above its level in the comparable period, while the company also reported interest-bearing net debt for the quarter. The available material did not provide a year-on-year comparison for net debt or an explanation of its change. These indicators remain part of the results picture alongside the earnings shortfall against expectations and pressure from energy costs.
Yara estimated gas costs at $450 million for the fourth quarter of 2026 and $445 million for the first quarter of 2027, according to an Investing.com report. The estimates follow a $165 million reduction in adjusted earnings from energy costs in the third quarter’s year-on-year comparison. The company scheduled its third-quarter results presentation and online question-and-answer session for October 22, 2026, at 13:00 Central European Time. The event will allow investors to follow management’s presentation of the results and its answers to questions. The published gas estimates cover the next two quarters, putting energy costs among the key items the market will track in the company’s upcoming disclosures.
