SK hynix said on October 23 it had halted its review of pre-IPO financing options and a potential initial public offering for its Solidigm unit, a decision it said did not reflect any change in the unit’s growth outlook or investment needs. The announcement came as the company’s shares in Seoul fell 2.53% to 1,192,000 won at 9:41 a.m., according to Chosunbiz. U.S. chip stocks also declined in the previous session, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index falling 6.72% and Micron shares dropping 6.26%. Early trading therefore showed no confirmed rise in the stock after the decision, contrary to the initial version of the story. SK hynix’s U.S. depositary shares closed at $131.69 on October 22, according to EL7 data.

SK hynix said halting the review did not change its assessment of Solidigm’s prospects or the amount of investment it needs, and that it would continue to examine the timing and scale of investment and financing methods. The options under consideration included direct investment by the parent company and raising external funding through an IPO. IPO financing would have helped support spending on facilities, with proceeds potentially directed to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks and cancellations. But suspending the review of that path leaves other financing options under assessment, while expansion needs remain. The company said it would continue evaluating alternatives that support Solidigm’s growth and enhance value for existing shareholders.

The company links Solidigm’s need for new investment to rising demand for memory in the era of artificial intelligence, saying limited capacity at its current facilities is insufficient to keep pace with increasing demand. It added that the unit needs additional production facilities in the United States. In its second-quarter results, SK hynix said demand for high-performance memory products for AI servers had driven prices higher, helping it surpass the record set in the previous quarter. This backdrop shows that the financing decision also concerns the company’s ability to expand production to meet data-center demand. The company did not provide an alternative date for completing its review of financing options in its announcement.

Solidigm had begun preparing for a possible listing through presentation meetings with investment banks to select their roles, Reuters reported, adding that the company could raise $15 billion. The figure was cited as potential IPO proceeds, not funding that had been secured. Separately, Reuters said South Korean authorities tightened dual-listing restrictions in July to strengthen shareholder protections, and that the regulator believed a Solidigm listing could violate those restrictions. These concerns remain part of press coverage, while SK hynix officially attributed its decision to capital-market conditions and stock-price trends. That leaves the listing path subject to financing and regulatory considerations alongside the industrial expansion plan.

SK hynix has ordinary shares listed on the Korea Exchange, as well as U.S. depositary receipts on Nasdaq under the ticker SKHY, according to its investor-relations page. Company data for the second quarter showed it had signed long-term agreements with about 10 customers and started commercial HBM4 shipments in the second quarter, with a plan to increase production in the second half of 2026. These steps link expansion in high-performance memory to customer demand and production investment, while the company has not changed its stated assessment of Solidigm’s needs. The Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to meet on October 27 and 28 for a two-day meeting that includes a press conference. SK hynix’s next announced step is to continue assessing the timing and scale of investment and financing methods, without setting a date for announcing a new decision.
