Marten Transport reported diluted earnings per share of $0.04 for the third quarter on October 22, 2026, below the $0.073 per share estimate cited by Investing.com ahead of the announcement. The result came despite an increase from $0.03 in the corresponding quarter of 2025, according to the statement of operations accompanying the company's release. Quarterly net income rose to $2.909 million from $2.226 million in the same period a year earlier. The company's performance thus combined a year-over-year improvement in profitability with a failure to reach the earnings level indicated by estimates published before the results. The annual improvement coincided with higher truckload rates, while management attributed margin pressure to fuel costs and the mechanism for recovering them through surcharges.

On revenue, the statement of operations showed operating revenue rose to $223.231 million in the third quarter of 2026 from $220.470 million in the corresponding quarter. However, the result fell short of the $230.03 million revenue estimate cited by Investing.com in its earnings table for the company before the announcement. Revenue moved in a different direction when fuel surcharges were excluded, falling to $184.2 million for the quarter, according to the official earnings release. Revenue on that basis had stood at $194.0 million in the corresponding period a year earlier, marking a decline despite the increase in reported total revenue. The performance follows a change in the scope of the company's business, as it had sold its intermodal operations effective September 30, 2025, according to its previous third-quarter earnings announcement.

Operating income for the quarter rose to $3.064 million from $2.738 million in the third quarter of 2025, according to the statement of operations. The operating ratio improved to 98.6% from 98.8% in the corresponding period, according to the segment table accompanying the company's release. Expenses thus continued to absorb most operating revenue, despite the improvement in the ratio and the increase in operating income from a year earlier. In the investor presentation accompanying the results, management said the average truckload rate per total mile, excluding fuel surcharges, rose 14.1% year over year in the third quarter of 2026. Investing.com had identified the company's ability to translate improving freight rates into margin expansion as the key issue for investors in its preview of the announcement.

Management detailed the quarter's cost burdens in its investor presentation, noting that net fuel costs increased by $3.5 million compared with their quarterly average during the first half of the year. Health insurance costs also rose by $2.0 million compared with their quarterly average in the first half, adding another expense burden. Management linked margin pressure to the lag in recovering higher diesel prices through fuel surcharge programs. It also cited higher fuel consumption in refrigerated transport operations as a factor weighing on margins. The company had attributed pressure on its earnings at the start of the year to "severe and prolonged winter storms and the sharp spike in diesel prices," according to its first-quarter earnings release.

Compared with the immediately preceding quarter, quarterly earnings fell from the $5.3 million in net income the company reported for the second quarter of 2026. Diluted earnings per share in that quarter were 7 cents, according to the company's previous earnings announcement, leaving the current results below that level despite the year-over-year improvement. Regarding its financial position, management described the company's balance sheet in the investor presentation as a "strong, debt-free balance sheet." It said this position allowed it to continue investing in technology and its fleet. It added that the balance sheet also supported investment in organic growth opportunities, among the areas of investment it outlined alongside the third-quarter results.
