Jio's $3.2 Billion IPO Draws Demand of More Than 5 Times Shares on Offer
Key Facts
Demand for Jio Platforms' $3.2 billion initial public offering exceeded 5 times the shares on offer on Thursday, October 22, according to Reuters, with the retail investor portion fully subscribed. Qualified institutional buyers led demand, with bids approaching 12 times their allocation, in the latest update during the subscription period. Retail bids reached 1.45 times the shares allocated to the category on Thursday, after its portion was fully subscribed. Reuters quoted an analyst tracking the IPO as saying strong retail demand was "largely due to the Reliance brand," whose reach extends beyond Jio's telecommunications business. Investors receiving anchor allocations included the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and BlackRock, according to the agency's report on the offering.
The rise in demand on Thursday followed full subscription of the IPO in less than two hours after public bidding opened on Wednesday, October 21, according to Reuters. By the end of the first subscription day, investor bids totaled 3.16 times the shares on offer, before exceeding 5 times the following day. Comparing the speed of subscription with Jio's offering, the agency said the National Stock Exchange of India's IPO was only 42% subscribed on its first day. Hyundai Motor India's IPO was 18% subscribed on its first day, according to the comparison Reuters included in its report on the opening of Jio's IPO. The offering values Jio Platforms at up to $108.3 billion, according to the agency, and includes the issuance of 270 million new shares.
At an IPO marketing event, Akash Ambani presented the company's customer base of 533 million to investors, according to Reuters' report on Jio's offering. The company's official governance page lists Akash Mukesh Ambani as managing director of Jio Platforms, a position he holds as the company moves toward a stock market listing. Providing background on the group's operations, the company's official profile says its subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, served 524.4 million customers in India at the end of March 2026. Telecommunications accounts for about 90% of Jio Platforms' total revenue of $15.45 billion, according to figures cited by Reuters in its IPO report. The same business also contributes about 94% of the company's profit, making it the main source of both revenue and profit for Jio Platforms.
Repayment of the telecommunications unit's loans tops the planned uses of IPO proceeds outlined by Jio in its updated prospectus, according to Reuters. The company intends to direct up to 275 billion Indian rupees, equivalent to $2.89 billion, toward repaying or prepaying those loans. Jio plans to allocate the remaining proceeds to general corporate purposes, including capital expenditure, according to details in the prospectus. On regulatory risks, Jio warned in the same prospectus that Indian data protection and telecommunications rules "may limit data-driven monetization." The IPO is scheduled to close on October 23, after opening on October 21, with Jio shares set to begin trading on October 28, according to the dates reported by Reuters.
