Crypto Long Positions Worth $418 Million Liquidated as Market Falls
Key Facts
The cryptocurrency market saw $418 million in long positions liquidated as the market declined, according to EL7 coverage dated October 22. The liquidations hit positions betting on rising prices, following other long liquidations earlier in the same month. EL7 coverage dated October 17 had reported $133.9 million in long liquidations as cryptocurrency market capitalization fell. Against this backdrop, Arab Bank Switzerland's review for October 12 to 19 showed total market capitalization falling from $2.84 trillion to $2.76 trillion. The decline over that period was 2.82%, according to the bank's weekly review. Bitcoin fell over the same period from $83,923 to $82,702, recording a loss of 1.46%.
Cryptocurrency market capitalization had also declined earlier in October, according to a Talos report published on October 8 covering the week of October 1 to 7. Market capitalization stood at $2.94 trillion in that report, down 1.2% on the week. Talos said: "Total cryptocurrency market capitalization stands at $2.94 trillion, down 1.2% over the past week." In an earlier episode linked to U.S. price data, CoinJar said in its review published on October 22 that a higher-than-expected September inflation reading briefly pushed Bitcoin below $80,000. That wave was accompanied by more than $900 million in liquidations of leveraged positions, according to the review. CoinJar described the move, saying: "A higher-than-expected September consumer price inflation reading briefly pushed Bitcoin below $80,000, wiping out more than $900 million in leveraged positions in the process." Bybit explains in its contract trading terms that maintenance margin is the minimum required to keep a position open. A position may be liquidated if margin falls below that threshold, according to the platform's rules. Bybit says: "If your margin falls below this level, your position may be liquidated."
Meanwhile, net inflows returned to U.S. spot Bitcoin funds during the week through Bloomberg's report published on October 22 via Moneycontrol. The funds attracted $1.1 billion in net inflows during the week up to that point, according to the coverage. The inflows followed net outflows of $909.6 million over the previous two weeks. Bloomberg described the flows as a recovery from outflows over that period, coinciding with losses and liquidations in the cryptocurrency market. On the upcoming monetary policy schedule, the Federal Reserve's official calendar lists the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on October 27 and 28.
