Coinbase Opens Trading in Thousands of Stocks and ETFs to Agents 24/5
Key Facts
On September 22, Coinbase announced an expansion of Coinbase for Agents to include stock and ETF trading, alongside previously available cryptocurrency and derivatives trading. The company said agents can access thousands of U.S. stocks and funds, with trading available 24/5. Fractional stock purchases start at $1, while Coinbase said trading is commission-free. The service also lets agents pay for the data and models needed to make trading decisions using their Coinbase account login. The company launched the service on June 11 to connect an AI agent to a customer’s account and enable trading, payments and task execution within user-defined limits.
Coinbase frames the expansion as part of its effort to offer agents a platform bringing together multiple assets and services, describing the service in its announcement as becoming an all-in-one platform for them. Users can connect an agent to a Coinbase account and specify which assets it can access and how much it may spend, according to the company. They can also restrict its activity to a particular wallet, including configuring it for cryptocurrency trading only. The settings allow users to require approval for each individual action instead of granting the agent open-ended authority. But the company said isolated accounts for testing stock trading were not yet available and would come later. Users remain responsible for directing the agent’s activity and for the risks of transactions it executes, according to a Coinbase notice.
The service combines trading and payments through the x402 protocol, which Coinbase says allows an agent to buy data or model inference using the same balance used for trading. According to the company, users do not need subscriptions, API keys or separate accounts to fund and manage these payments. The feature links the agent’s spending on information with executing a transaction within the Coinbase account, according to the company’s description of the service. Coinbase said the x402 protocol processed more than 230 million transactions, totaling more than $54 million, over slightly more than a year through its September announcement. It added that Coinbase is the largest facilitator of transactions through the protocol. More than half of x402 transactions were facilitated through Coinbase, it said.
Coinbase said setting up the service can take 3 clicks, and that Perplexity or Grok users can search for Coinbase among connectors or extensions and then log in. It also said the agent platform connects through the Model Context Protocol, enabling integration with AI tools. Securities transactions are conducted through Coinbase Capital Markets, a member of FINRA and SIPC, while Apex Fintech Solutions handles clearing and custody, according to the company’s announcement. These arrangements apply to stock and ETF trading, while the service also includes cryptocurrencies and derivatives. Coinbase warned that AI agents may make mistakes or malfunction. It said users direct all agent activity and bear the risks of transactions it executes.
The expansion of agent trading comes as Coinbase reported growth in its share of cryptocurrency trading volumes in the second quarter of 2026. The company said its share reached 10.3% that quarter, compared with 9.1% in the first quarter, setting a new record and marking a third consecutive quarterly increase. For on-chain agent activity, Coinbase said more than 99% of agentic commerce on-chain used the USDC stablecoin in the second quarter. It added that more than 90% of agentic stablecoin transaction volume took place on the Base network, and that more than 97% of on-chain agent transactions used the x402 protocol. The company announced that it will publish its third-quarter 2026 financial results on October 29. The company did not include specific estimates for growth in agent-based finance activity in its expansion announcement.
