Aave announced on 25 September 2026 the launch of a tokenized equity market on its fourth version on Base, allowing 7 U.S. stocks to be used as collateral for borrowing, according to an Aave Labs announcement and deployment details posted on the governance forum. The launch lineup includes Coinbase-issued tokens for Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla shares. These assets serve only as collateral, while the USDC stablecoin is the market's sole borrowable asset. Aave said the securities are offered under Regulation S to eligible non-U.S. persons in permitted jurisdictions. The arrangement allows eligible participants to obtain stablecoin liquidity by depositing those tokens, subject to the eligibility requirements governing their offering.

Each token represents a certificate issued by the Coinbase Onchain special-purpose limited entity, according to details of the legal structure published by Aave. The underlying shares are held at Alpaca Securities in segregated accounts in the issuer's name. The custodian is prohibited from lending these shares or using them for its own account. It is also prohibited from placing a lien on them, restricting dealings in the assets held in custody. As for dividends, Aave said they are "reinvested" through purchases of additional shares after fees and withholding tax, rather than paid in cash to token holders.

The Aave market allows deposits, borrowing, repayments and withdrawals around the clock, every day of the week, with an exception tied to corporate actions. In the event of a stock split, for example, the relevant reserve is paused until the new multiplier is applied, according to the platform's announcement. Meanwhile, Chainlink's tokenized equity price feeds operate around the clock for 5 days a week in the initial phase, according to the price provider's documentation. When the underlying markets close, the feed retains the last price even though the contract remains callable. Chainlink calculates a token's value by multiplying the underlying share price by the issuer's multiplier, which reflects dividend reinvestment and corporate actions.

The resumption of price updates after a market closure poses a risk to borrowing positions, according to a LlamaRisk assessment published on Aave's governance forum. Information accumulated during the closure may be incorporated into a single price update when the feed resumes. That repricing can make a borrowing position eligible for liquidation, with LlamaRisk saying it may "become liquidatable only at that point." On the lending side, the hub's design limits exposure to equity-backed loans to liquidity suppliers who opt into this market. LlamaRisk said this exposure "does not extend to other Aave markets."

The equity market rollout on Base followed the launch of Aave's fourth version on the Ethereum mainnet on 30 March 2026. Aave Labs said in its April update that deposits in the version on Ethereum approached $10 million during its first week of operation. By 13 April, deposits had exceeded $20 million, according to the same update. In its September update, Aave Labs announced that total deposits in the fourth version had surpassed $1 billion for the first time. Active loans stood at $310 million, with those figures covering the fourth version as a whole.

Following the market's launch, an incentive program for tokenized equity suppliers began on 13 October 2026, according to TokenLogic on Aave's governance forum. The firm said the program runs "until the budget is exhausted." Rewards are paid in USDC through the Merkl platform to participants who supply tokenized equities. The reward rate is subject to change and does not constitute a guaranteed return for participants. The program may also be modified or ended early, according to the published terms.

On further expansion, Aave said it expects to add more tokenized equities to the market and enable GHO borrowing. These additions are subject to governance procedures and risk review. It also intends to review supply and borrowing caps through the risk steward mechanism as token supply and liquidity depth on their trading platforms grow. Aave Labs had said in its Base market activation notice that the vote on Snapshot was the binding vote for executing the deployment. The notice made proceeding with activation conditional on a positive outcome in that vote.
