Comfort Systems reported net income of $489.0 million, or $13.91 per diluted share, in the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with $291.6 million and $8.25 per share a year earlier. Revenue rose to $3.77 billion from $2.45 billion in the same period of 2025. The company said revenue increased 50% and earnings per share 70% year over year. Operating cash flow also exceeded $1 billion during the quarter, compared with much weaker financial results a year earlier. However, Investing.com reported that shares fell 6.2% in after-hours trading on Thursday following the results and the CFO change. The platform attributed the decline to the absence of forward guidance and the announcement of a finance leadership change.

Chief Executive Brian Lane said “continued demand and the performance of our teams” supported the results. He added that cash flow exceeded $1 billion in a single quarter, consistent with the operating figure reported by the company, which was $1.01 billion. Operating cash flow was $553.3 million in the third quarter of 2025, putting this year's result at nearly double that level. The comparison provides a measure of cash generation alongside revenue and earnings growth.

Backlog stood at $17.81 billion on September 30, 2026, up from $14.06 billion on June 30 and $9.38 billion on September 30, 2025. On a same-store basis, backlog reached $17.39 billion, compared with $9.38 billion a year earlier. This shows the reported order balance expanding over the year and rising from the end of the previous quarter. The company frames this balance in the context of organic growth it says it is positioned to continue. Lane said the company is well positioned to grow through year-end and during 2027, while maintaining high levels of profitability and consistent cash flow. These outlook statements are management's comments about the period ahead.

This comparison alone does not support interpreting the share-price decline as the result of margin pressure, as the year-over-year rate was unchanged according to the disclosure. The after-hours decline coincided with the results announcement and CFO change, according to Investing.com. The company announced that CFO Bill George will retire after filing the annual report for the year ended December 31, 2026. Julie Sheff will take over as CFO when he departs. George helped found the company in 1997 and has held the role since May 2005.

The results came as U.S. private housing starts registered a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,221,000 units in September. That was a 5.2% decline from the revised August estimate of 1,288,000 units and a 7.4% drop from the September 2025 rate of 1,319,000 units, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Housing data provide context for the construction sector, while Comfort Systems' figures for the same quarter showed revenue growth and a higher backlog. The company is scheduled to hold a webcast and conference call to discuss its results and outlook on October 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Central Time. The company said a replay of the call will be available on the next business day. The Census Bureau has set November 18, 2026, for the next release of housing starts data.
