Solana Falls 2.18% After Alpenglow Activation Aimed at Faster Transaction Finality
Key Facts
Solana fell 2.18% to $104.602 during trading on Thursday, October 22, 2026, according to Investing's price table, a day after the Alpenglow consensus protocol was activated on the mainnet. The Solana Foundation confirmed that the protocol went live on Wednesday, October 21, in a change aimed at shortening the time needed to permanently finalize transactions on the network's ledger. The foundation set the target at about 150 milliseconds, compared with about 12.8 seconds under the previous consensus protocol, Tower BFT. Thursday's price, an intraday reading rather than a final close, compares with $106.930 recorded in the previous day's table. The foundation said in its activation announcement: "Alpenglow is live on mainnet." The new consensus system went live against a market backdrop that included a U.S. interest rate increase in September and military and diplomatic developments in the Middle East.
Alpenglow changes how validators exchange votes within the network. The Solana Foundation explains that they send votes directly to one another and aggregate them into certificates, instead of recording them as on-chain transactions. According to Anza's documentation, the "confirmed" and "finalized" states have become equivalent under the new protocol, both meaning that a transaction is permanently finalized on the ledger. Nodes that do not participate directly in consensus may learn of finality later, when they receive a block carrying the finalization certificate, according to the Alpenglow documentation. For validator operations, Anza's vote account guide sets the admission ticket at 0.8 SOL per epoch. This ticket is burned from each admitted validator's vote account once per epoch, under the mechanism described in the guide. As for staked tokens, Galaxy said the upgrade leaves the way staking rewards are earned unchanged. The company said in its overview of the consensus change rollout: "Nothing changes in how staked tokens earn rewards."
In regional developments, Axios reported, citing Israeli and U.S. officials, that dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets flew a sortie on Monday that reached the Iranian border. The Associated Press reported that the U.S. State Department announced on Wednesday that it had ordered non-essential personnel to leave the U.S. embassy in Riyadh and its consulates. In a separate statement on Wednesday, the Saudi Press Agency said the Saudi and Jordanian foreign ministers discussed efforts to de-escalate tensions, prevent conflicts from spreading and restore security and stability. In the oil market, ING said in an analysis dated the Tuesday before the report and published by Investing that the market was pricing in a significant risk premium given the volatile situation in the Middle East. The bank said of oil pricing: "This suggests that the market is pricing in a significant risk premium, given the volatile situation."
Against the monetary policy backdrop, the Federal Reserve raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 1/4 percentage point in September. The range reached 3.75–4% following the decision, according to the U.S. central bank's statement. Minutes of the September meeting showed that most participants believed another increase in the target range would likely be appropriate before the end of the year. The minutes described their position by saying that "another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by the end of the year." In Solana's development, upcoming stages include Rotor, a component for propagating block data, according to Galaxy's overview of the changes associated with Alpenglow. This component aims to reduce the number of stages through which block data travels across the network, while the Solana Foundation places its launch in a later release of the broader development effort. The next meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled for October 27–28, 2026, according to the central bank's meeting calendar.
