Rentokil Initial's board approved a $200 million share buyback programme, according to the company's trading update for the third quarter of 2026. The group said the programme would begin shortly, linking the decision to lower leverage and the strength of its balance sheet. Its ratio of net debt to adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation had fallen to 2.4 times as of 30 June 2026. The company expects a further reduction in debt with the receipt of proceeds from the sale of its Solitude unit. Providing context for the decision to return cash to shareholders, first-half results showed free cash flow rose to $318 million from $282 million in the corresponding period of 2025, an increase of 12.8%.

Group revenue in the third quarter totalled $1,890 million, compared with $1,810 million in the same period of 2025, according to the company's statement. This represented reported year-on-year growth of 4.4%, compared with growth of 4.0% at constant currencies. Organic group revenue growth was 3.4% during the quarter, a growth measure the company reported alongside the reported and constant-currency rates. That pace was below the organic growth of 3.6% the group recorded in the first half of 2026, according to its results released in July. In its international pest control business, the company recorded organic growth of 5.7% in the third quarter, outpacing the group's organic growth.

In North America, quarterly revenue rose to $1,176 million from $1,137 million in the third quarter of 2025, according to the trading update. Revenue growth in the region was 3.4% on both a reported and constant-currency basis, while organic growth reached 3.2%. Customer retention improved to 81.1% from 80.9% in the corresponding period, progress that coincided with continued operational turnaround measures. The company said residential lead flow trends improved in September after weakness in July and August. However, lead flow remained down around 1% in September, leaving residential demand in contraction despite the improving trend towards the end of the quarter.

The expected balance sheet support comes from an agreement Rentokil announced in September 2026 to sell Solitude and its Vertex Aquatic Solutions unit to Bain Capital. The company put the proposed total consideration for the transaction at $230 million on a cash-free, debt-free basis. It said in the sale announcement that expected net cash proceeds after tax would be around $180 million. The transaction forms part of a financial backdrop that includes reducing debt and returning cash to shareholders, according to the link the group drew in its quarterly update. Elsewhere in its capital allocation, Rentokil currently expects to spend around $100 million on mergers and acquisitions during 2026.

Rentokil continues to adjust its operational structure after announcing a reorganisation into 2 operating divisions, North America and International. The company said the structure aims to strengthen accountability for performance within its operations. It also aims to accelerate execution and simplify operations, objectives it announced alongside the new structure. On commercial customer retention, the group said a pilot involving a dedicated team had exceeded its expectations. It plans to expand the pilot nationally during the fourth quarter of 2026, among the next operational steps set out in its trading update.

The group maintained its forecast for annual profit in line with "current market expectations", as it put it in the quarterly statement. Separately, it announced that Chief Financial Officer Paul Edgecliffe-Johnson would retire from his executive role for family health reasons. His departure from the board will take effect on 31 January 2027, according to the management change announcement. The company scheduled its preliminary annual results for 25 February 2027, according to its investor financial calendar. The share buyback programme is due to be completed by the announcement of those results, according to the timetable announced by the board.
