QuantumScape announced plans on October 21, 2026, to build a 100 MWh battery cell production line. The company said the line aims to meet demand from AI data centers and the aerospace and defense sectors. The announcement coincided with the release of results for the third quarter of 2026, which ended on September 30. The quarterly net loss was $84.5 million, while operating expenses under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles totaled $92.4 million, according to the company's shareholder letter. QuantumScape ended the quarter with liquidity of $819.8 million.

The adjusted loss before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization was $60.7 million during the quarter, according to the shareholder letter. Management described the result as in line with its expectations. The company maintained its full-year guidance for this loss measure at between $250 million and $275 million. Quarterly capital spending totaled $4.4 million, primarily focused on its technology development roadmap and related facilities. The company also maintained its 2026 capital spending guidance at between $27 million and $37 million.

On the commercial front, customer billings totaled $9.8 million during the quarter, according to the company. These billings covered customers in the automotive industry and other sectors, and included development payments, partner payments and cell shipments. The company calculates this operating metric based on the value of invoices issued, regardless of their accounting treatment. It stressed in the shareholder letter that it is "not a substitute for revenue under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles." In the automotive sector, the joint research agreement with Honda includes a multiyear program to develop solid-state batteries and related manufacturing processes.

QuantumScape selected Germany's Mühlbauer to supply cell assembly equipment for the planned line, according to its statement. The selection followed an assessment of Eagle pilot line operations and the development of improvements for scaling up. For data centers, the company says its "QS Power Block" design can provide 4 times the power density and 5 times the runtime of current industry benchmarks, based on prototype testing and simulated system configurations under controlled conditions. The company has begun engineering work on higher-throughput processes and equipment as part of the new line's plan. It plans to unveil details of its next technology platform and its collaboration model with automakers at the Kyoto symposium on November 11. It aims to begin cell production on the new line in 2028.
