CME Confirms First Uniswap Block Trade, Offers 10,000-Token Contract
Key Facts
CME Group confirmed in a statement published on October 20 that FalconX and GSR had executed the first block trade in its new Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures. The execution marks the start of block trading in the new products, which expand the group's range of cryptocurrency derivatives available to institutions. The exchange had previously announced October 19 as the launch date for Uniswap futures, pending regulatory review. Block trades are derivatives transactions whose terms are privately negotiated outside the central order book, according to CME's explanation of how they work. Once agreed, the transactions are submitted to the group's clearinghouse. The trade was therefore executed through private negotiation within the futures market.
According to product specifications published by CME, the standard Uniswap contract covers 10,000 tokens and trades under the symbol UNI. The group also offers a micro contract covering 1,000 tokens, trading under the symbol MUN. The difference in size gives market participants a choice between two levels of exposure to the same asset when using the new contracts. The group's cryptocurrency contracts are financially settled, according to the products' frequently asked questions page. Explaining its trading requirements, CME said: "There is no need to own a digital wallet, as all our contracts are financially settled." Access to trading requires opening an account with a futures broker, the entry route the group specifies for this market.
CME linked the expansion of its product suite to strong client demand for institutional risk management tools in highly liquid altcoin markets. Griffin Sears, head of derivatives at FalconX, said in the statement confirming the trade: "Institutional demand is moving beyond the largest digital assets toward tokens with distinct use cases, such as Bitcoin Cash in payments and Uniswap in decentralized finance." That trend places assets' use cases among the reasons for expanding the range of products institutions trade, according to Sears. In Uniswap's case, the UNI token serves a role in protocol governance, according to its developer documentation. The governance system allows token holders to collectively manage, develop and steer the protocol's future, the function of the asset underlying the contracts.
The introduction of the new contracts comes amid broader cryptocurrency derivatives activity at CME, spanning futures and options from the start of the year through the statement confirming the trade. The group said average daily trading volume in these products exceeded 242,000 contracts over the period. The notional value of that daily average was $7.9 billion. Average daily open interest approached 240,000 contracts over the same period. The notional value of average daily open interest was $14.3 billion, another measure of outstanding activity across the cryptocurrency product suite.
A comparison of earlier periods shows that the group's average daily cryptocurrency derivatives trading volume was higher in the first half of 2026 than in the third quarter. The first-half average was about 279,800 contracts a day, according to CME's statement on its product expansion. The notional value of that daily trading was $8.3 billion over the period. In its quarterly report, the group recorded average daily trading volume of 195.8 thousand contracts in the third quarter of 2026. Average daily open interest in that quarter was 197.4 thousand contracts, according to the same report.
The expansion of the contract lineup was preceded by the introduction of round-the-clock trading in CME's cryptocurrency derivatives, part of efforts to broaden trading access in this market. The group said in a June statement that trading volume during the first weekend after the service began exceeded 7,200 futures and options contracts. The notional value of those trades was nearly $50 million over the inaugural weekend. CME offers the new contracts in a market regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The product page also explains that combining positions across the cryptocurrency derivatives suite may reduce margin requirements through risk offsets, allowing more efficient use of capital when those reductions apply.
