China's CSI 300 index closed down 0.97% at 4,111.93 points in the October 21, 2026 session, according to historical trading data from Investing.com. The decline came as economic growth accelerated while investment continued to contract over the first three quarters of the year. China's gross domestic product grew 4.5% year-on-year in the third quarter, compared with 4.3% in the second quarter, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Meanwhile, fixed-asset investment, excluding rural households, fell 7.2% in January–September compared with the same period a year earlier. The investment contraction extended to the private sector, which recorded a year-on-year decline of 10.4% over the first three quarters, according to the bureau. The pickup in output growth between the two quarters thus coincided with a decline in investment spending from the start of the year through the end of September.

In the property sector, real estate development investment fell 20.6% year-on-year in January–September, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The decline was steeper than the drops in both overall fixed-asset investment and private investment over the same period. On prices, Reuters calculations based on Chinese statistics bureau data showed new home prices fell 2.8% in September compared with the same month a year earlier. Prices had fallen 3.0% year-on-year in August, marking a slower pace of decline in September. Reuters said "prices fell 2.8% year-on-year, compared with a 3.0% decline in August." The annual decline in new home prices thus continued alongside the contraction in property investment over the first three quarters.

Against this economic backdrop, growth in outstanding yuan loans slowed to a record low of 4.8% year-on-year in September, according to Reuters. That compared with growth of 4.9% in August, with outstanding loans continuing to expand at a slower pace. In its loan prime rate announcement on October 20, 2026, the People's Bank of China set the one-year rate at 3.0%. The benchmark rate for loans with maturities of more than five years stood at 3.5%, according to the bank's announcement. Markets are turning their attention to the Chinese Communist Party's fifth plenum, scheduled for October 26 to 29, according to Investing.com. Markets are awaiting the meeting for signals on support for growth, following the acceleration in output growth, continued contraction in investment and slower expansion in outstanding loans.
