Bankinter profit rises 9% to 295 million euros in third quarter
Key Facts
Spain's Bankinter posted a net profit of 295 million euros in the third quarter of 2026, up 9% from the same period a year earlier, according to its official results presentation. The result matched expectations among analysts polled by Reuters, who had forecast quarterly net profit of 295 million euros. Reuters attributed the year-on-year profit increase to "higher lending income", as the bank's loan book expanded and net interest income grew. But quarterly profit fell 6% from the second quarter, leaving the annual improvement accompanied by a decline from the previous three months. Net profit for the first nine months of the year totalled 901 million euros, up 11% from the corresponding period of 2025.
In the lending business, to which Reuters attributed the profit growth, the bank's official statement showed its loan book reached 87,134 million euros at the end of September 2026. The loan book rose 5.6% from a year earlier, alongside increases in interest income on both an annual and quarterly basis. Third-quarter net interest income totalled 602 million euros, up 6% from the same quarter a year earlier, according to the results presentation. It also rose 2% from the second quarter, continuing to grow during a quarter in which net profit fell from the previous quarter. Cumulative net interest income for the first nine months reached 1,762 million euros, up 6% year on year based on the rounded percentage in the bank's presentation.
Fee and commission income, meanwhile, grew year on year but fell from the previous quarter, according to figures released by Bankinter. Net fees and commissions totalled 210 million euros in the third quarter, up 7% from the same period a year earlier. However, the figure fell 11% from the second quarter, in contrast to the quarterly increase in net interest income. For the first nine months, net fees and commissions reached 651 million euros, up 13% year on year, according to the official results presentation. Including all revenue sources, the bank said in its statement that total operating income rose 6.5% to 2,397 million euros in the first nine months of the year.
The results follow Bankinter's announcement in its July statement of a net profit of 605 million euros for the first half of the year. Profit at that point had risen 11.7% from the first half of the previous year, ahead of the current third-quarter results. On expenses, operating costs for the first nine months totalled 833.9 million euros, according to the bank's latest official statement. These costs rose 2.3% year on year, a slower pace than total operating income growth over the same period. On solvency, Bankinter reported that its Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio rose to 13.2% at the end of the third quarter.
In the market, Bankinter shares fell during the results session, despite reported net profit matching the average analyst forecast in the Reuters poll. Investing said in its results coverage that the shares dropped 4.8% during trading. The share price stood at 14.552 euros during the session, according to the same coverage of the results day. Also on the day of the announcement, the platform reported that JPMorgan cut its price target for the bank's shares to 18.20 euros. The previous price target was 18.40 euros, with the revision coinciding with results that combined annual profit growth with a decline from the previous quarter.
