Vultr announces 20-megawatt campus in Chennai using AMD chips

Key Facts

1Vultr's Chennai campus starts with 20 megawatts of capacity using AMD Instinct MI355X graphics processors.
2Generative Bionics closed a funding round worth 70 million euros, according to a CDP Venture Capital announcement.
3The Chennai project was preceded by Vultr's announcement of a 50-megawatt campus in Ohio with 24,000 chips.
4Vultr plans to expand the Chennai campus in 2027 using newer processors and AMD rack-scale solutions.

Vultr announced an AI computing campus project in the Indian city of Chennai, starting with 20 megawatts of capacity using AMD Instinct MI355X graphics processors, according to a company announcement. The Chennai site represents region number 34 in Vultr's global cloud data center network. The company describes the project as one of the largest campuses using Instinct processors globally. According to its enterprise platform announcement, the deployment of its infrastructure is tied to placing computing workloads close to end users to improve performance and latency. It said this deployment also aims to provide "control over data residency, with options for data sovereignty," alongside bringing computing capacity closer to its users.

The Indian expansion follows another project Vultr announced in Springfield, Ohio, in December 2025, according to Reuters. That campus has an announced capacity of 50 megawatts, compared with the smaller initial capacity planned for the Chennai project. Plans for the U.S. facility include 24,000 chips, according to the project description reported by the agency. Vultr also selected Instinct MI355X graphics processors for the U.S. campus, the same technology used in the initial phase of its Indian project. The two announcements place AMD processors within the company's cloud infrastructure plans in the United States and India, with different announced capacities at the two sites.

In Europe, Generative Bionics announced a planned collaboration to use AMD technology in a network of physical AI robot-training facilities, starting with a center in Italy. The project combines real-world experiments and digital simulations in robot training. The collaboration follows a funding relationship between the two companies: CDP Venture Capital confirmed in an announcement published in December 2025 that Generative Bionics had closed a funding round worth 70 million euros. AMD's investment arm participated in the round alongside Duferco, Eni Next, RoboIT and Tether, according to the same announcement. Generative Bionics' industrial partnerships extend to Eni, which announced it was exploring robotics applications in inspection and remote control. The collaboration also includes remote assistance and support for work in complex environments, according to Eni's statement, linking robot development to specific operational uses.

In the market, AMD shares closed at $552.72 on October 21, 2026, according to EL7 data. On project execution, Fincantieri's partnership with Generative Bionics aims to conduct initial field tests of a welding robot by the end of 2026. The partnership concerns the development of a humanoid robot for welding in shipyards, according to Fincantieri's announcement. In India, Vultr plans further expansion of the Chennai campus during 2027, according to the company's announcement. The planned phase includes AMD's next-generation Instinct MI455X processors. It also includes the company's Helios rack-scale solutions, adding a subsequent phase to the Indian project after its announced initial capacity.
