Tesla profit falls 43% to $787 million despite free cash flow beat
Key Facts
Tesla's net income attributable to common shareholders fell 43% year on year to $787 million in the third quarter of 2026, according to the company's financial disclosure, while adjusted earnings per share exceeded analysts' expectations. The company reported quarterly revenue of $28,046 million, below the average estimate Tesla published in its analyst consensus ahead of the results. Analysts had expected revenue of $28,341 million for the same period, according to the company-compiled consensus. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.48 in the third quarter, exceeding the average analyst forecast of $0.45 per share in the same consensus. The results combined a decline in net income from the year-earlier period with lower-than-expected revenue and adjusted earnings per share above estimates.
The earnings decline extended to operations, with operating income falling 56% year on year to $718 million, according to Tesla's financial results presentation. The operating margin was 2.6% in the third quarter as operating expenses rose. Those expenses reached $4,776 million, up 39% from the year-earlier period. Among spending items, research and development expenses rose to $2,761 million in the third quarter of 2026. That compared with research and development spending of $1,630 million in the third quarter of 2025, according to the same disclosure. Automotive regulatory credit revenue, meanwhile, fell to $113 million from $417 million a year earlier.
In its automotive business, Tesla reported deliveries of 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026 in its production and deliveries statement. Deliveries exceeded the average analyst forecast of 461,974 vehicles, according to the company-compiled delivery consensus for the same period. Quarterly production totaled 464,391 vehicles, below the number Tesla delivered during the quarter. The company said in its results presentation that "battery availability remained the limiting factor" in increasing vehicle production. On profitability, Reuters reported that the automotive gross margin, excluding regulatory credits, was 18.1%, exceeding expectations of 16.7% compiled by Visible Alpha. As background, Tesla said its Full Self-Driving metric includes both upfront payments and monthly subscriptions. The company excludes free trials from this metric, according to the definition in its financial results presentation.
Outside the automotive business, energy generation and storage revenue fell 16% year on year to $2,881 million in the third quarter, according to Tesla. The company reported deploying 13.7 gigawatt-hours of energy storage products during the same period, according to its operational statement. Deployment volume was below the average analyst forecast of 15.9 gigawatt-hours in the consensus compiled by Tesla. In contrast to energy revenue, services and other revenue rose 33% year on year to $4,605 million, according to the results presentation. In market trading following the results, Reuters reported on the evening of October 21 that Tesla shares fell 2% in after-hours trading. The decline came after the shares reversed their initial gains during that session, according to the news agency.
On cash flow, Tesla generated positive free cash flow of $1,531 million in the third quarter of 2026, according to its financial disclosure. That followed actual capital spending of $4,732 million during the period. Analyst estimates compiled by the company had pointed to higher capital spending, averaging $7,771 million for the same quarter. The consensus also forecast negative free cash flow of $4,506 million, compared with the positive result Tesla reported. The free cash flow beat thus coincided with quarterly capital spending below the level analysts had estimated. For the remainder of 2026, the Associated Press reported that Tesla cut its annual capital spending forecast to $20 billion. The company's previous forecast for the same year was $25 billion, according to the news agency.
