Blackstone private equity net realization profits fall 49% despite higher proceeds
Key Facts
Blackstone's private equity net realization profits fell 49% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, according to the company's earnings statement, while fee-related earnings grew over the same period. The segment's net realization profits fell to $194,149 thousand from $380,102 thousand in the third quarter of 2025. Across the group, total net realization profits also declined, reaching $331,533 thousand compared with $504,846 thousand a year earlier. The group-wide measure fell 34% year on year, a smaller decline than in private equity. Fee-related earnings, meanwhile, rose to $1,572,052 thousand, up 6% year on year, moving in the opposite direction to realization profits during the quarter.
The decline in private equity realization profits coincided with an increase in the segment's realization proceeds, which reached $9.8 billion in the third quarter, according to the earnings statement. The company had reported proceeds of $9.3 billion for the same segment in the third quarter of 2025, putting the current quarter's total above its year-earlier level. Blackstone defines these proceeds in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as including proceeds from asset sales or other monetizations. The definition also includes current income and capital returned to investors from collateralized loan obligations, meaning proceeds differ from net profits realized on exits. The company said in its definition that they include "proceeds from asset dispositions or other monetizations," alongside the other items included in the measure. In the listing market, Reuters reported on October 19, before the earnings release, that the Blackstone-backed AirTrunk real estate trust was among companies that had withdrawn or paused their offering plans. The suspension or withdrawal of these listing plans offers an example of the difficulties in the IPO market that form the backdrop to investment exits.
On fundraising, Blackstone attracted inflows of $63.3 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to its earnings disclosure. Credit and insurance accounted for most of those inflows, drawing $35.8 billion over the same period. The group's total assets under management stood at $1,368.3 billion at quarter-end as it continued raising money for its investment strategies. In a separate announcement on October 19, Blackstone said its fifth Energy Transition Partners fund had closed at a final size of $8.7 billion. The company added in the fund's closing statement that it was "more than 50%" larger than its predecessor, expanding the amount raised for the strategy. The fund's acquisitions included Flow Control Holdings, which supplies components used in liquid cooling for data centers, according to the same statement. The acquisition places the supply of data center cooling components among the activities of companies in which the energy transition fund has invested, alongside the announcement of its increased size relative to its predecessor.
Distributable earnings per share were $1.32 in the third quarter of 2026, down 13% year on year, according to Blackstone's results. Before the announcement, Investing.com cited analysts' quarterly earnings-per-share forecasts in a preview published on October 21. The preview put expected earnings at $1.29 per share, below the distributable earnings per share the company subsequently reported. The forecasts published before the results also included revenue of $3.35 billion for the same period. On the cash dividend, Blackstone declared a third-quarter distribution of $1.12 per share. The company set November 2, 2026, as the record date for shareholders entitled to the distribution. The cash dividend is scheduled to be paid on November 9, 2026, according to the timetable announced with the company's quarterly results.
