Oil and gas producer Var Energi's operating profit rose to $2.21 billion in the third quarter of 2026, with increased shareholder payouts despite disruptions to some production operations. Earnings before interest and taxes stood at $1.1 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier, according to Reuters. However, the result fell short of analysts' average forecast of $2.26 billion despite the strong year-on-year increase. Chief Executive Nick Walker attributed the strong results to "higher realised oil and gas sales prices," the agency reported. Cash flow from operations after tax totalled $1.5 billion during the quarter, according to Investing's coverage of the company's results.

Var Energi announced a $400 million dividend for the third quarter, according to Reuters, in line with higher earnings and cash flows. It also raised its fourth-quarter dividend guidance to the same amount, with the payouts including a special component. The dividends remain subject to the approvals and conditions set out in the company's disclosure. According to Investing's coverage of the earnings call, the company expects total dividends of about $1.45 billion in 2026. That compares with total dividends of $1.2 billion in 2025, putting the expected annual cash return to shareholders above the previous year's level.

On the operational front, the company's production averaged 369,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day during the quarter, according to Investing's coverage of the results presentation. Production fell from the previous quarter while remaining broadly stable year on year, according to the company's operational disclosure. Output was affected by operational problems at the Johan Castberg and Jotun fields and in the Asgard area. These problems involved facilities rather than reservoirs, according to the operational details published with the results. The quarterly production decline coincided with earnings benefiting from the realised oil and gas sales prices cited by Walker.

The results come as Var Energi presses ahead with plans to acquire BlueNord, announced on 21 July 2026, according to Investing. The deal aims to expand the company's portfolio onto the Danish continental shelf and strengthen its ability to generate cash and fund dividends. In an earlier assessment published in July, RBC downgraded Var Energi shares to "sector perform" from "outperform." The bank attributed its decision to the leverage risks and balance-sheet pressures added by the BlueNord deal. In the same assessment, it cut its price target for the shares to 55 Norwegian crowns from 60 crowns, according to Investing.

Responding to the results announcement, DNB Carnegie analysts said in a note cited by Reuters: "We consider the third-quarter results broadly neutral." The shares fell about 1.03% from the previous close during trading covered by Investing on the day of the results. On costs, the company raised its annual production cost forecast to about $11 per barrel, according to coverage of the earnings call. Previous guidance pointed to a cost of about $10 per barrel during 2026. The company attributed the revised cost forecast to the appreciation of the Norwegian crown.

Var Energi maintained its development capital expenditure guidance for 2026 at between $2.5 billion and $2.7 billion, according to Reuters. Completion of the BlueNord acquisition requires approval from the target company's extraordinary general meeting, under the terms announced when the deal was proposed. Completion conditions also include regulatory approvals. Closing the acquisition also depends on approvals from licence partners, alongside the required corporate and regulatory approvals. The timetable announced when the deal was unveiled envisaged closing near the end of 2026.
