U.S. Ethereum ETF Outflows Reach $1.08 Billion Since Start of October
Key Facts
Net outflows from U.S. spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds reached $1.08 billion from the start of October through the October 20, 2026 session. The total was cited in a Cointelegraph report published by FXStreet on October 21, drawing on data from SoSoValue. Outflows over that period exceeded September's net inflows of $832 million, with the current month still underway. Even so, year-to-date net flows remained positive at about $485 million, according to the same report. Fund flows thus reversed direction from September, while the funds retained net inflows for the year despite withdrawals recorded since the start of October.
Withdrawals emerged early in the month, with U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs recording daily net outflows of $202 million. Those withdrawals occurred in the October 6 session, according to an analysis published by Investing.com on the cryptocurrency and its exchange-traded funds. In subsequent trading, Ethereum's price fell 5.5% over a 24-hour period through October 7, according to the same analysis. The price decline came in the first part of October, coinciding with money leaving investment vehicles linked to the cryptocurrency in the U.S. market. The move preceded publication of the current cumulative total, as well as the release of U.S. producer price data for September on October 15.
Among U.S. Ethereum-linked products is BlackRock's exchange-traded fund, trading under the ticker ETHA, which had net assets of $8,079,205,742. That value was as of October 20, 2026, according to the company's fund page, the date of the last session included in the outflow total cited in the report. BlackRock says the product allows investors to gain exposure to Ethereum through the traditional brokerage accounts they use for investing. The company adds that this route provides access to the cryptocurrency without the complexities associated with holding it directly. That description places the fund among vehicles offering Ethereum exposure through a brokerage account, with the product handling custody of the cryptocurrency instead of the investor directly.
The market's background includes the start of trading in shares of Grayscale's Ethereum fund, known by the ticker ETHE, on NYSE Arca on July 23, 2024. The company documented the trading start date and share ticker in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Within the regulatory framework for cryptocurrency-linked exchange-traded products, the SEC allowed in-kind share creations and redemptions for Bitcoin and Ethereum products. The decision added this option to the cash mechanism, expanding the permitted methods for carrying out creations and redemptions in those products. Jamie Selway, director of the SEC's Division of Trading and Markets, said in its statement that "in-kind creation and redemption provide flexibility and cost savings."
On the U.S. economy, Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed the producer price index for final demand rose a seasonally adjusted 1.3% in September. The bureau published the reading on October 15, 2026, during the month that saw outflows from U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs. The monthly increase exceeded August's 0.5% rise, according to the official release, marking an acceleration in producer price gains from the previous month. September's reading also exceeded analysts' expectations of 0.6%, according to Axios' coverage of the inflation figures. The release thus showed an increase above both the previous monthly gain and expectations, ahead of the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy meeting scheduled for late October.
The Federal Reserve's calendar sets October 27 as the start of the next meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, which is responsible for U.S. monetary policy. The meeting runs through October 28, covering the two days of discussions listed in the central bank's official calendar. The next U.S. producer price index release follows, according to the schedule announced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its statement. The next release will cover producer prices for October 2026, following September's reading showing an acceleration in the monthly increase. It is scheduled for publication on November 13, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern time, according to the date and time specified in the official release.
