Interactive Brokers Launches Autonomous Trading With Opportunities Across More Than 75,000 Financial Instruments
Key Facts
Interactive Brokers announced on October 21, 2026, the launch of an autonomous trading service that allows connected AI to identify opportunities across more than 75,000 listed stocks, options and exchange-traded funds worldwide. The company said in its statement that the service allows opportunities to be monitored and orders executed according to investors' instructions. It described the goal as executing strategies on a "broader scale with greater speed and discipline." The launch marks a shift from the previous integration, under which clients reviewed each instruction and converted it into an order within the brokerage platform before sending it to the market. The company had announced a direct integration with Claude on June 1, 2026, to enable AI agent-assisted trading.
Using the service begins with creating a dedicated AI segment and funding it through a transfer from the main account, according to the company's announcement. This step does not require opening a new account or making an external deposit. Eligibility is limited to individual cash accounts at the broker, according to the product page. The company excludes joint, retirement and institutional accounts, as well as adviser-managed accounts and discounted "Lite" accounts. Qualification requires executing at least 10 trades, each worth 100 dollars or more, within two weeks. Qualifying trades are executed using review-and-approve mode before autonomous trading is activated, making this stage a prerequisite for using the service.
For execution, the service supports stocks and eligible equity options in line with account permissions, according to the product page. Available order types include market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders, all valid for the day. The service does not support margin trading or short selling, limiting the transactions clients can delegate to the AI provider. The AI trading agreement states that clients are responsible for every trade executed by the provider, including trades that violate their instructions or are duplicated. The agreement explicitly says: "You are responsible for every trade," leaving the consequences of execution with the account holder even when the authorized provider makes errors.
The user agreement warns of the possibility of losing all assets held in the dedicated AI segment. Interactive Brokers says it does not control the AI provider's operation, data or availability and does not guarantee its performance. According to the risk disclosure, the agent may execute trades based on outputs that appear credible but are incorrect. It may also rely on outdated information or misinterpreted instructions, affecting the orders it executes on the client's behalf. The disclosure warns that technical failures, connectivity issues and delays may result in missed, duplicate or incorrectly priced orders. Frequent automated trading may also generate commissions, fees and tax consequences that reduce the account's value.
The service launch follows growth in Interactive Brokers' client base in the third quarter of 2026, according to Investing.com. The number of client accounts rose 35% year-on-year to 5.58 million. The company's results for the same period showed a 12% increase in commission revenue from a year earlier. That revenue totaled 602 million dollars, according to the company's quarterly earnings statement. The broker's shares had fallen 2% in after-hours trading on October 15, 2026, following those results, a move that preceded the autonomous trading announcement.
On availability, Interactive Brokers said the product and its features vary depending on the affiliate with which the client holds an account. Availability also depends on the client's country of residence, according to the launch statement. The company added that funding, account and eligibility limits in place at launch may change over time. On the shareholder entitlement calendar, the company set December 1, 2026, as the record date for the next quarterly dividend. The dividend is scheduled to be paid on December 14, 2026, according to the third-quarter earnings announcement.
