Beta Wins Approval for Customer Flights With Electric Aircraft, Flies 34 Nautical Miles
Key Facts
Beta Technologies said its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft had received a special airworthiness certificate from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, allowing market survey flights with operators and stakeholders. The company said the aircraft completed its first flight under the new approval on October 20, 2026, covering 34 nautical miles in 20 minutes. Beta described the authorization as the first of its kind for an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, allowing it to conduct these flights with prospective customers. The aircraft took off vertically from Plattsburgh Airport in New York before transitioning to wing-borne flight en route. It then completed the flight with a vertical landing at Burlington Airport in Vermont, according to flight details published by the company.
Beta identified the approval in its statement as a "special airworthiness certificate for market surveys," a regulatory pathway designated for experimental purposes. FAA guidance classifies market surveys, sales demonstrations and customer crew training among the experimental purposes for which special airworthiness certificates are issued. The company continues to work toward full type certification and the start of commercial operations while expanding real-world operational flights and validating its technology. Beta linked the approval to the operational and safety record accumulated across its conventional and vertical takeoff and landing aircraft programs, which together have covered more than 250,000 nautical miles. The company's official history also records the completion of a series of full, piloted transitions between flight modes by its ALIA vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
For its conventional takeoff and landing aircraft program, Beta announced in its quarterly update that it had completed the requirements definition phase of the regulatory certification process. It said in its earnings statement that investment in research and development supports certification programs and the development of technologies central to its business. It also reported expanding its charging network to 138 sites, adding operational infrastructure to its electric aircraft development program. In Utah, the company conducted flights with Alpine Air using its conventional takeoff and landing aircraft to demonstrate a regional model for transporting time-sensitive radiopharmaceuticals. Operations highlighted in its quarterly update included transporting manufactured organs in collaboration with United Therapeutics, among the medical applications targeted by its technology.
On aircraft demand, Loganair signed a term sheet to purchase 5 electric aircraft from the ALIA conventional takeoff and landing family. The term sheet includes options to purchase 5 additional aircraft, according to Beta's announcement of the agreement, which followed successful demonstrations in the United Kingdom. Loganair expects the aircraft to enter service in 2029 to support passenger and cargo transport across its network. Alongside its aircraft development work, Beta was selected by Eve Air Mobility to supply electric propulsion motors. Eve said the agreement represents a potential opportunity for Beta worth up to $1 billion over 10 years, an estimate of the potential business under the supply agreement.
The regulatory progress follows Beta's latest reported quarterly results, which showed revenue of $14.7 million in the second quarter of 2026. Revenue in the corresponding period a year earlier was $6.0 million, according to the company's financial results statement. Beta posted a net loss of $148.8 million for the quarter as it continued its technology development and regulatory certification programs. Cash and cash equivalents stood at $1,479.5 million on June 30, 2026, according to the quarterly disclosure. When announcing those results, the company raised its annual revenue guidance range to between $42 million and $50 million for 2026.
Beta will announce its financial and operational results for the third quarter of 2026 on November 3, according to its earnings date announcement. The company said the disclosure would be released before the market opens that day. It will hold a live webcast to discuss the reported financial and operational results. The webcast begins at 8:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time, according to the schedule announced by the company. The quarterly disclosure follows the first flight under the market survey certificate, as work continues toward full type certification and the start of commercial operations.
