Baidu shares closed at 77.70 Hong Kong dollars in Hong Kong on 21 October 2026, down 1.15%, according to Investing.com data, as the company faces continued pressure on its online marketing business. Total second-quarter revenue fell 4% year on year to 31.33 billion yuan, according to Reuters, missing analysts' average forecast. That forecast stood at 31.96 billion yuan, according to London Stock Exchange Group data cited by the agency, leaving quarterly performance below expectations. In the earnings statement, Chief Executive Robin Li acknowledged the challenges facing the business, saying: "Our online marketing business remains under pressure." The contraction in total revenue coincided with expansion in AI-related businesses, led by cloud infrastructure services and graphics processing unit computing.

Online marketing services revenue totaled 13.1 billion yuan in the second quarter, according to the earnings table published by Baidu, down 19% from the same period a year earlier. Revenue from the business rose 4% from the previous quarter, meaning the improvement during the quarter did not offset the annual contraction. Revenue from the business stood at 16.2 billion yuan in the second quarter of the previous year, according to the company's statement for that period. It recorded a year-on-year decline of 15% at the time, placing the current drop in the context of a contraction that began before the latest quarterly results. The pace of the annual decline in online marketing services thus accelerated between the two periods, despite revenue returning to quarterly growth in the company's latest results.

By contrast, revenue from core AI-related businesses reached 12.5 billion yuan in the second quarter, according to Baidu's statement, representing another aspect of its performance during the period. AI cloud infrastructure revenue totaled 7.3 billion yuan, among the figures the company reported for its cloud business. GPU cloud revenue grew 283% from the same period a year earlier, marking strong expansion in the business. Baidu attributed that growth to "surging demand for public cloud-based AI computing," according to the earnings statement. This expansion in cloud services came alongside a decline in the group's total revenue, with its quarterly performance combining growth in AI businesses and a contraction in online marketing services.

On profitability, net income attributable to Baidu totaled 2.3 billion yuan in the second quarter under generally accepted accounting principles, according to the company's statement. During the same period, consolidated capital expenditure reached 11,390 million yuan, the spending item reported by the company in its financial results. Consolidated free cash flow recorded a deficit of 7,954 million yuan, leaving cash performance negative despite an accounting net profit during the quarter. On liquidity and investments, Baidu said total cash and investments stood at 283.1 billion yuan at the end of the second quarter, under its definition of that total. That balance was as of 30 June 2026, at the close of the period covering the reported capital expenditure and free cash flow deficit.

As background to the stock's trading, Baidu became a company with dual primary listings on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, according to the company's announcement on its listing status. Its trading structure includes Class A ordinary shares and American depositary receipts, with each representing a different unit of ownership. According to Baidu's announcement, each American depositary receipt represents 8 ordinary shares of this class, the ratio linking the U.S. receipt to the company's ordinary shares. Baidu shares were also included in the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Connect programs, according to a separate company announcement on the availability of its shares. This gave eligible investors in mainland China direct access to trading its ordinary shares, alongside the trading channels associated with its listings in the two markets.

The latest October trading followed a sharp fall in the shares in Hong Kong after the release of second-quarter results in August, according to Investing.com's reporting at the time. The decline in that move reached 13.1%, as tracked by the platform in its coverage of trading after the financial results were released. The price cited in that coverage reached 87.9 Hong Kong dollars in the Wednesday session following the earnings announcement. That move followed results that combined total revenue below analysts' expectations with a continued annual contraction in online marketing services. The latest October close was below the price recorded in the August coverage, as the company's results continued to diverge between expanding cloud services and pressure on the marketing business.
