United Airlines forecast operating revenue growth of more than 20% year on year in the fourth quarter of 2026, but its earnings outlook fell short of analyst estimates amid rising fuel costs. In an investor update filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company projected adjusted diluted earnings per share of between $0.50 and $1.50 for the period. That compares with a consensus estimate of $1.76 per share, according to London Stock Exchange Group data cited by Reuters on October 20. Even the upper end of the company's range was therefore below the average analyst estimate for the final quarter of the year. The outlook pairs strong sales growth with earnings below expectations, as management assumes fuel prices will remain elevated in the period ahead.

Operating revenue in the third quarter of 2026 reached $17.9 billion, up 17.4% from the same period a year earlier, according to the company's earnings disclosure. That growth came as capacity increased 1.3% year on year during the reported quarter. Total revenue per available seat mile, a measure linking revenue to available capacity, rose 15.9%. Revenue growth thus outpaced capacity expansion, alongside an increase in revenue generated per unit of capacity. A comparison of third-quarter results with the fourth-quarter outlook indicates that the company expects annual operating revenue growth to accelerate at the end of the year.

Revenue gains extended across several parts of United's business, according to details in its quarterly earnings release filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Basic economy revenue grew 16% year on year in the third quarter of 2026. Loyalty revenue rose 17% over the same period, growing faster than basic economy revenue. Cargo revenue also increased 23% from the corresponding quarter a year earlier. Cargo growth outpaced both loyalty and basic economy revenue growth, as well as the increase in the company's total quarterly operating revenue.

On costs, the average price per gallon of fuel was $3.90 in the third quarter, according to United's earnings disclosure for the period. Operating cost increases were not limited to fuel, with adjusted unit costs excluding fuel rising 7.8% year on year. That measure increased more slowly than total revenue per available seat mile over the same period. The company's adjusted net income was $833 million in the third quarter, according to the quarterly earnings release. Management expects growth in unit costs excluding fuel to slow in the fourth quarter compared with the previous quarter, according to its investor update.

On its financial position at the end of September 2026, United reported available liquidity of $17.7 billion, according to the earnings disclosure. Total debt, finance lease obligations and other financial liabilities stood at $26.4 billion on the same date. The company's net leverage ratio was 2.4 times for the trailing annual period ended that month. In trading on October 21, United shares rose 6.88% to an indicative intraday price of $104.50, according to Chicago Board Options Exchange data published on MarketScreener. The reading was recorded at 13:34:28 U.S. Eastern Time, during the session following the publication of Reuters' report on the earnings outlook.

For the fourth quarter of 2026, United bases its outlook on fuel costs of about $4.80 per gallon, according to the investor update. The company estimates that each $0.01 change in the price of a gallon of fuel equates to an impact of about 2.5 cents on quarterly earnings per share in the short term. Management's expectations for elevated costs extend beyond year-end, according to remarks by Chief Executive Scott Kirby reported by Reuters on October 21. Kirby said the company expects "fuel prices to remain elevated throughout 2027." United aims to offset all additional fuel costs through revenue growth during 2027, according to the agency's coverage of management's remarks.
