Mercantile Bank beats estimates with adjusted earnings of $1.42 a share
Key Facts
Mercantile Bank's adjusted earnings per share beat Wall Street expectations in the third quarter of 2026, according to Investing.com's coverage of results announced on October 20. Adjusted earnings were $1.42 a share, compared with analysts' forecasts of $1.35, as the interest margin improved and funding costs fell. Net income rose to $24.1 million from $23.8 million in the year-earlier period, according to coverage of the earnings call. But diluted earnings per share under accounting standards fell to $1.39 from $1.46 in the third quarter of 2025, according to the company's statement. The adjusted earnings beat thus came alongside an increase in total profit and a decline in reported profit per share as the company incurred higher expenses.
On the funding side, the company reported an increase in its net interest margin to 3.73% in the third quarter of 2026 from 3.49% in the corresponding period of 2025. The wider margin coincided with a decline in the cost of funds to 1.79% from 2.25% a year earlier, according to the earnings statement. The company attributed the lower cost to a decline in rates paid on money market accounts, among changes in its funding sources during the period. Lower rates on time deposits also helped reduce the cost of funds, according to the factors cited in the company's statement. Alongside lower rates on these accounts and deposits, the company increased its reliance on low-cost funding, another factor it said helped bring down the cost of funds.
Meanwhile, non-interest expenses rose to $43.6 million in the third quarter from $34.8 million in the same period of 2025, according to the company's statement. Spending pressures included costs to integrate Eastern Michigan Bank, among the factors accompanying the year-on-year increase in expenses. The company also cited higher personnel costs and expansion-related expenses as additional drivers of the increase. In the investor presentation, management described the period by saying: "This is a year of investment in people and technology," according to Investing.com. That investment strategy, including spending on staff and technology, formed the backdrop to the near-term earnings pressures discussed in coverage of the presentation.
In deposits and lending, the loan-to-deposit ratio fell to 88.3% at the end of September 2026 from 92.8% at the end of June, according to the company's statement. Mercantile attributed the decline primarily to growth in local deposits during the quarter from their level at the end of the previous period. In its services business, the company reported growth in treasury management fees and said the addition of new commercial clients was among the supporting factors. It added that clients expanded their use of products and services, also contributing to growth in fees associated with these activities. The third-quarter results follow second-quarter results published in July, when the company's revenue was $68.76 million, according to Investing.com. That revenue was slightly below analysts' consensus forecast of $68.81 million for the second quarter of 2026.
In trading on the day the results were announced, Investing.com recorded MBWM shares at $59.06, up 1.1% during the October 20, 2026 session. This was an intraday price on the day of the earnings release, while the previous session's closing price was $58.42, according to EL7 data. That previous closing price was from October 19, before the company announced its quarterly results and details of its third-quarter performance. Alongside the earnings announcement, Mercantile declared a regular cash dividend of $0.40 per common share in a separate statement. The company said the declared dividend was 5.3% higher than the dividend for the corresponding period a year earlier, compared with the fourth-quarter dividend of 2025.
Looking ahead, management expects annualized net loan growth of between 5% and 7% in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to Investing.com's coverage of the earnings call. Management linked that projected range to commercial lending opportunities, which it said supported its expectations for loan growth in the final quarter of the year. On the dividend schedule, the company set December 4, 2026 as the record date for shareholders eligible for the next cash dividend, according to the dividend statement. The dividend is scheduled to be paid to those shareholders on December 16, 2026, according to the date announced by the company. After that, management expects to complete the conversion of its core and digital banking systems in the first quarter of 2027, according to the earnings statement, as part of the company's technology investment program.
