Gunnison Copper Expects U.S. Depositary Receipts to Begin Trading on October 26, Subject to Regulatory Conditions
Key Facts
Gunnison Copper said in its October 20 announcement that it expects its American depositary receipts to begin trading on NYSE American at the opening of trading on Monday, October 26, 2026, or around that date. The receipts will trade under the symbol GUNN as part of the company's efforts to broaden its reach among U.S. investors. Trading remains subject to its registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission becoming effective and receipt of final exchange approvals. Chief Executive Craig Hallworth framed the expansion in terms of copper's uses in sectors attracting investor interest in the United States. He said in the company's earlier announcement: "Copper connects some of the strongest U.S. investment themes: artificial intelligence, electrification and national defense."
The latest announcement set out the structure of the security the company plans to make available to investors, with each American depositary receipt representing 30 common shares. This replaces the previously announced ratio of 35 common shares per receipt. The company had announced plans to establish a Level II American depositary receipt program representing its common shares in the U.S. market. The common shares will continue to trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol GCU, under the listing structure announced by the company. In its preliminary approval announcement, Gunnison emphasized the regulatory status of the move, saying: "Preliminary approval does not constitute final listing approval."
On the financial front, Gunnison reported revenue of US$23.6 million in the second quarter of 2026, according to its financial and operating results statement. Revenue rose from US$20.104 million in the first quarter, according to the results the company announced for that period. Second-quarter net income reached US$13.1 million as operations at Johnson Camp advanced. Earnings per share were US$0.03 for the same period, according to the results statement. In a move affecting its capital structure, the company announced in July that it had settled its convertible debt in cash, avoiding the issuance of 28.9 million common shares that could have resulted from conversion of the debt.
Gunnison announced that Johnson Camp reached commercial production in September 2026, among the operating developments preceding the announcement of the expected U.S. trading date. The mine produced 1,304,448 pounds of copper cathode in August, according to the company's operations update. Production from September 1 to 17 totaled 894,767 pounds, the volume the company reported for that partial-month period. Under the project arrangements, operating revenue is first used to repay work-stage costs to Nuton before being credited to Gunnison. Rio Tinto says ore processing using Nuton technology eliminates conventional concentration, smelting and refining, producing copper cathode at the mine gate and shortening the supply chain.
The collaboration involving Nuton technology extends to U.S. data centers, with the announced agreement providing for Amazon Web Services to use the first copper produced by the technology in components for its U.S. data centers. According to Rio Tinto's announcement of the collaboration, the project aims to produce about 30,000 tonnes of refined copper during the technology deployment period. That target period spans 4 years, according to the plan presented by Rio Tinto. In July, Gunnison and Nuton were announced as selected recipients of US$13.9 million in tax credits under the federal program supporting advanced energy projects. Gunnison later announced, however, that it had decided not to pursue the Department of Energy tax credits.
The Gunnison project is currently permitted for in-situ recovery, according to the company's project permitting page. A shift to open-pit mining requires amendments to existing permits as part of the regulatory process the company outlines for its development. Gunnison submitted an application to amend its reclamation plan, according to its September announcement on permitting progress. The company expected approval of the plan amendment by the end of 2026, the deadline it set for that regulatory step. It also targeted completion of all approvals needed to enable a final investment decision by mid-2028, according to its announced timeline.
