Commerce Bancshares profit rises to $155.0 million, earnings per share beat estimates
Key Facts
Commerce Bancshares' net income rose to $155.0 million in the third quarter of 2026, according to its earnings release filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The result exceeded net income of $141.5 million in the corresponding quarter of 2025, marking year-on-year growth for the group. But it fell short of the previous second quarter's profit of $159.8 million, putting the quarterly comparison on a different trajectory from the annual comparison. Third-quarter earnings per share were $1.08, according to Investing's account of the results. That beat analysts' estimates of $1.07 per share, while the comparison with the previous period showed a quarterly decline in net income.
For earnings per share, the earnings release had reported $1.10 for the second quarter of 2026, above the third-quarter level. In details of business activity during the current period, trust and asset management fees rose by $15.0 million from the same period a year earlier, according to Investing. The annual increase in these fees was 25.7%, as part of the group's third-quarter results. Alongside its fee-generating services, average loan balances during the quarter were $20.7 billion, according to the same website. That figure represents average loans throughout the quarter, while the fee comparison measures the change from the corresponding quarter a year earlier.
The group had assets of $35.3 billion at the end of June 2026, according to figures published by Commerce Bank on the size of its business. Total deposits stood at $27.9 billion on the same date, before the period covered by the current results. These balances were as of June 30, the end of the second quarter that the group uses for its quarterly profit comparison. In business expansion, acquisition activity included the FineMark deal, which expanded the group's private banking services, according to the announcement of the deal's completion. The deal also expanded wealth management, adding to the scope of the businesses whose financial results the group reports.
The FineMark acquisition strengthened Commerce's presence in Florida, according to the bank's announcement of the acquisition's completion. The deal added locations in Arizona, alongside the expansion in private banking and wealth management. It also added locations in South Carolina, extending the geographic additions to states beyond the group's presence strengthened by the deal in Florida. The acquisition completion announcement also included a timetable for integrating the operating systems needed to bring the business into the group. That timetable set the second half of 2026 as the planned date for the systems conversion, before the group presented a revised date in its third-quarter earnings presentation.
In a development after the end of the third quarter, Commerce Bank announced the completion of its acquisition of investment banking advisory firm Nolen & Associates. The firm is based in St. Louis and serves middle-market companies across the United States, according to the bank's statement. On the financial consideration for the deal, the bank said: "Terms of the transaction were not disclosed." The deal provides advisory services to business owners, private equity funds and companies, according to Investing's account of the acquisition. These services include advice on business sales, acquisitions and capital raising, giving them a different scope from the private banking and wealth management activities expanded by the FineMark deal.
For the next step in FineMark's integration, the third-quarter earnings presentation set February 2027 for the conversion of its systems, according to the presentation filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. This replaces the timetable in the acquisition completion announcement, which had targeted the second half of 2026. The group attributed the revised date to allowing additional time for testing before the operational conversion. It added that the timetable also allows additional time for the teams involved in the integration to prepare. It confirmed in the presentation that "financial expectations and cost savings targets remain unchanged," despite the systems conversion moving to February 2027.
